PDP accuses Buhari, APC of manipulating Courts, INEC

The Peoples Democratic Party said on Friday that the gains of its 16-year rule in Nigeria were being eroded by the governing All Progressives Congress.
The party said under the APC, basic democratic tenets have failed to function while the party perpetuates “actions tilting towards dictatorship”.
The PDP made the allegation in a communique made available at the end of its meeting of national caucus which held at the Ondo state governors lodge in Asokoro district of Abuja on Thursday.
The communique was signed by the national secretary of the party, Wale Oladipo, “…there is serious cause for concern in the nation’s political environment, especially as it concerns the survival of the nation’s democracy,” PDP said.
PDP also accused the APC government of insensitivity to critical issues raised by the opposition party.
They said President Muhammadu Buhari-led government is interfering with the activities of the judiciary, legislature and the Independent National Electoral Commission using the Directorate of States Services.
The PDP said it had resolved to vigorously resist the APC’s interference.
“The party finds it offensive and provocative, the judiciary’s handling of cases involving it in election tribunals in some states, particularly, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Imo, Taraba, Ogun, Plateau and Lagos states.
“The tainted judgments of these tribunals, which are evidently products of arm-twisting from the nation’s security operatives under the direct command of an APC member remains unacceptable to us,” it said.
The PDP also said it had “conclusive evidence” of external influence on the Rivers State governorship election tribunal.
The party wondered how the tribunal was able to deliver its judgment within 24 hours, “in a case that had nearly 100 witnesses, 1000 pieces of documentary evidences and nine counsel’s final written addresses; each not less than 40 pages”.
“The decision, in view of the rather interesting history of the case, indicates that the judiciary, like the PDP and the Nigerian electorate are victims of the APC-led Federal Government,” PDP said.
The party said it hoped the judiciary, as an institution, would restore its image by taking immediate measures to protect itself from political interference as well as ensure that needed steps are taken at the appellate levels to remedy the “embarrassing” ruling by some of the election petitions tribunals.
“The party has also noted clandestine moves by the APC to use various agencies of government, to manipulate the processes and rig the outcome of the forthcoming governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states in their favour and vowed to deploy every means within the law to resist such,” it said.
The PDP called on President Buhari, “as the leader of the country, to stand up for justice and equity and halt the undemocratic attitudes of agents of government in the interest of peace and stability”.
PDP commends its Senators
The party also commended PDP senators for their decision to walk out of the Senate chamber shortly before the former governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi, was confirmed as a minister.
The party said the decision of the senators was commendable because it was a “collective stand against impunity and corruption, in line with the wishes and aspirations of the Nigerian people”.
The PDP said the decision by APC senators to confirm Mr. Amaechi served as “a death knell on their party’s pretentious war against corruption”.
“The PDP further notes that whilst former APC governors are being rewarded with ministerial appointments, their PDP counterparts are being hounded and harassed in the selective war against corruption,” it said.

Anambra community calm after alleged relocation of Boko Haram suspects

Ekwulobia community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra is peaceful and calm after the relocation of 47 Boko Haram suspects.
A correspondent who visited the prisons facility on Thursday, reports that there was heavy security presence at the entrance of the prisons.
Boko Haram suspects had been transferred to Ekwulobia minimum prisons in June amidst protests.
A native of the town, John Ezendu, said there was nothing to be excited about as there had been no threat to the tranquility of the community since the suspects were transferred to the town.
Mr. Ezendu said that what was important to the people of the town was for the government to construct good roads in the area as host of such facility.
“We understand that the Boko Haram suspects have been moved from here; that was no problem to us, as you can see there is no excitement.
“What we are praying and hoping for is the construction of our roads so that we can enjoy the benefit of federal presence”, he said.
A trader at the popular Ekwulobia market who identified himself as Chibuzor, said he was not aware of the relocation of the prisoners from the Ekwulobia prisons, adding that it was responsible for normal commercial activities.
Chibuzor however, said that the situation was in contrast to the protests that followed the transfer to the town.
“We don’t know about it; we do not have problem here; what I know is that after they came there was protest but for us, market boomed because the prisons authorities came to buy foams and other things,” he said.
A senior prisons official who pleaded anonymity said the transfer of the suspects was effected in the midnight of October 27.
The source also said the relocation was a great relief to the inmates as the prisons was almost at full capacity before the suspects arrived.
“I can confirm to you that the Boko Haram suspects have been moved”, the source said.

Chelsea v Liverpool: Mourinho has 'positive feeling'

Blues manager optimistic about upturn in results after encouraging midweek display at Stoke

Jose Mourinho is optimistic that his Chelsea side can turn their season around ahead of the Barclays Premier League champions' meeting with Liverpool this weekend.

The Blues have picked up 13 points from the first 10 matches of their title defence and suffered a midweek penalty shoot-out defeat to Stoke City in the League Cup, a competition they won last season.

Talking Tactics: Chelsea v Liverpool preview >>

Chelsea, who sit 15th in the BPL, have won one of their last seven matches in all competitions but Mourinho feels his team can take heart from their performance at the Britannia Stadium.

"It's difficult - but it's more difficult when you play very badly and lose, than playing well and losing," the former Real Madrid manager said. "They go home with sadness but with a positive feeling.

"How can [Eden] Hazard, or Oscar, or [John-Obi] Mikel, or John Terry, to say some names - I could say everyone - how can they go home with a lack of confidence?

"They played well, they didn't make many mistakes. They participated in the game a lot."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp heads into Saturday's match riding the crest of the wave of positivity surrounding his appointment at Anfield.

Klopp oversaw his first win in charge of Liverpool on Wednesday, a 1-0 League Cup victory over AFC Bournemouth, following three successive draws since replacing Brendan Rodgers at Anfield.

"I feel much better than after a draw," Klopp said. "But I don't think the other games were so much worse than today - of course, the result is the biggest difference and we did well tonight.

two draws in the BPL

"I saw minute by minute we were better in the game, we closed the spaces better and the whole 90 minutes we played football and created our chances.

"We didn't have any real experience together, so I'm really satisfied - the boys did really well."

Christian Benteke missed the AFC Bournemouth tie with a knee problem, but Klopp expects the Belgian - who came off the bench to score the opener in Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Southampton last week - to be fit for Saturday.

Benteke level with Giroud in head to head battle >>
Daniel Sturridge continues to struggle with a knee injury of his own and remains doubtful, but James Milner, the midfielder, is available after suspension.

Mourinho also faces a headache up front, with Diego Costa suffering a rib injury at Stoke, leaving the Spain striker's status for the weekend in question.

Branislav Ivanovic (hamstring) is likely to miss out for Chelsea, while Pedro (knock) is also a doubt.

Saraki loses as Appeal Court clears way for corruption trial

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed an appeal by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, seeking to quash corruption charges brought by the Code of Conduct Bureau against him.
The appeal court ruled Friday, upholding the authority of the Code of Conduct Tribunal to try Mr. Saraki.
Mr. Saraki is facing a 13-count charge of alleged false declaration of assets and corruption.
He denies the charges.
Mr. Saraki had challenged the jurisdiction of the tribunal and had asked the Court of Appeal to nullify the trial which is set to begin in November.
The Court of Appeal ruled that the “The CCT is a court of criminal jurisdiction, albeit limited jurisdiction”.
It added: “There is no inherent difference between a court and a tribunal. The only difference is that tribunals in most cases handle special cases”.
The three-member panel of judges, led by Moore Adumein, also affirmed that the tribunal was properly constituted- another kernel of Mr. Saraki’s suit.

Countries will form out of Nigeria soon – Prophet Iribhogbe relates his dream

Ignis Iribhogbe, a prophet and social commentator has foretold that Nigeria will split into five viable countries soon.
He made this revelation while narrating a dream he had.
In the dream, Ignis said that the ongoing blood shed by Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram, will come to an end and will surprisingly usher in, an era of peace, tranquility and progress for all parts of the present contraption called ‘Nigeria’.
However a “Nigerian Goberchev” according to him will also arise and break the fraudulent/imposed geographical contraption into 5 (five) viable countries as follows:
1. Biafra (present Southeast zone comprising the core Ndigbo)
2. O’odua (present Southwest plus Yoruba speaking areas of Kwara and Kogi)
3. Niger Delta (present South South)
4. Federation of Central Nigeria (present Plateau, Benue, some parts of Nasarawa, and Southern Kaduna)
5.Islamic Caliphate of Nigeria (the remaining parts of present Northern Nigeria).
He noted that after the division, there will be no more religious riots or senseless bloodshed by Boko Haram.

Sickle Cell: UCH, Ibadan to commence Bone Marrow transplant

The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan has disclosed its intention to commence an advanced bone marrow transplant that will ensure complete cure for patients with Sickle cell diseases.

The Consultant Hermatologist of UCH, Dr Titilola Akingbola who said this while addressing journalists stated that two- third of Nigeria population have Sickle Cell disease, adding that they have brought in experts from United States to train them on how it can be cured completely through the bone marrow transplant.

It is a great burden on Nigerians and Africa and it’s so sad that w have increasing long survival among patients who are most times surviving in pains. We will be using hydroxyures for them but it needs close monitoring. This new method needs blood donors for them to survive and it will save their lives completely.
It will be a red cell exchange which means the removal and replacment of the red cells. After this the patient will have total relief from the pains. They will only change the red cells coming from the bone marrow.

She said.

In his remark, the Head of Hermatologist, University of Illinois, Chicago, Prof Damiano Rondelli said for over 30 years, everyone knows that the bone marrow transplant can cure Sickle Cell diseases but they are afraid of the complications associated with it.

According to him, this new method has nothing to do with surgery, we will only take the cells out of the bones of the donors and give it to the Sickle Cell patients without any side effects.

Rondelli explained:

The complications of the transplant has scared so many parents, patients and even doctors away, but this is a combination of two drugs for the transplant and it involves less complications for the patients. We now have a new way of during the transplant without any form of therapy before we give the patient the stem cells. With it the patient will be 90 per cent Sickle Cell disease free.
No disease is associated with the transplant and that is what distinguishes it from the normal stem cell transplant. We believe UCH can become the centre for Sickle Cell disease treatment for Africa and that is why we need the help of everybody for sustenance for this new method to work especially in finance and donation of the bone marrow.

Reacting, the Chief Medical Director of UCH, Prof Temitope Alonge noted that the hospital has commenced the building of a Sickle Cell centre, but the construction has stopped due to lack of funding.

We need the assistance of well meaning Nigerians to complete this centre and also donors. When completed we will give free treatment for the first five patients.

He said.

Speaking about the game on Monday, October 26, Rooney revealed that all the money made from the testimonial will be donated to four charities, the NSPCC, Alder Hey Childrens’ Hospital, Claire House Children’s Hospice and the Manchester United Foundation.
“I would like to thank everyone involved in making this testimonial become a reality. Most of all I want to thank the fans for all their incredible support for me and the team since I joined the club,” Rooney said in the statement.

Iheanancho Leads City To Victory As Utd Crash Out

Nigerian International Kelechi Iheanacho was Man of the match as Manchester City thumped Crystal Palace to progress into the last eight of the Capital one cup.
One goal and two assists from the 19-year-old were enough to take the Man of the Match honours in City’s 5-1 win over Crystal Palace.
With not much between the teams as the half approached the halfway point, City took the lead as De Bruyne’s corner found Bony in box who did enough to head pass keeper Wayne Hennessey in the 22nd minute.
City extended their lead minutes later as Iheanacho drove into the box, drew two defenders towards him before sliding an inch-perfect cross to De Bruyne who made no mistake from close range.
De Bruyne will return the favour just before the half time break as he picked out Iheanacho for the young Nigerian to coolly slot home pass Wayne Hennessey.
There was more punishment for the visitors when Eliaquim Mangala was fouled in the box from a corner and Yaya Toure stroked the penalty home on 79 minutes.
Palace pulled back a goal when Damien Delaney hammered home a shot high past Caballero, but the rampant City had the final say when sub Manu Garcia slotted home the fifth after yet another good work from Iheanancho.

PDP senators vow to withdraw support for Saraki if Amaechi is confirmed

Senators belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and their All Progressives Congress, APC, were, yesterday, preparing for a showdown over different positions on the confirmation of two of 16 remaining ministerial nominees.
It was, however, learnt that Senate President Bukola Saraki was determined to weigh in on behalf of the former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi and the ministerial nominee from Cross River State, Usani Uguru. The duo had been caught up in a grudge war mounted by PDP senators.
Amaechi is held in contempt by the PDP Senate caucus for his role in the defeat of the former ruling party in the last round of elections. Uguru brought himself into the bad book of the PDP Senate caucus when, during his screening, he said “God forbid” to a question as to his membership of the PDP.
Following the end of the screening of the nominees yesterday, the PDP Senate caucus held a meeting where they reportedly took a position against the confirmation of Amaechi. The senators were said to have resolved not to consider Amaechi’s nomination unless the report of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges on the petitions filed against the former Rivers State governor was brought forward for consideration first.
Last five nominees screened
Five nominees were screened, yesterday, bringing to an end, the exercise that commenced about three weeks ago.
The five nominees screened were former Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University, Professor Anthony Anwuka (Imo); financial expert and medical doctor, Okechukwu Enelamah (Abia); newspaper columnist, Adamu Adamu (Bauchi); former Executive Secretary of National Hajj Commission, Mohammed Musa Bello (Adamawa), and Aisha Abubakar (Sokoto).
However, the confirmation exercise which was expected to commence immediately after, did not, as Senate President Saraki announced the adjournment of the Senate to today.
PDP senators sulk, plan offensive
PDP senators are also said to have been further miffed by the reverses suffered by the party in Rivers State in the last one week, including the cancellation of Governor Nyesom Wike’s election and that of PDP state legislators, and Tuesday’s Supreme Court’s rejection of Wike’s bid to negate the sitting of the Governorship Election Tribunals in Abuja.
Although they refused to address the media after their meeting which lasted for just thirty minutes, some members, who spoke to Vanguard on the condition of anonymity said the meeting resolved that before the confirmation, the Samuel Anyanwu-led Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions’ report, must be considered.
One of the sources also said the PDP senators, in the meeting, resolved not to allow Pastor Usani Uguru to be confirmed today. He described Uguru as a light-hearted man who cannot be entrusted with any sensitive public office like the one he was nominated for.
Also, at the meeting, the PDP senators, according to one of them, vowed to withdraw their support for the Senate President should he force Amaechi’s confirmation. Vanguard gathered that another meeting of the PDP caucus would be held before the confirmation.
APC senators plan counter-action
APC senators have equally scheduled a caucus meeting this morning before commencement of plenary where they are also expecting to fine-tune their strategies to push through all the nominees. The confirmation process is expected to hold today if enough APC senators are present in the chambers to outplay the PDP senators.
In that event, the Senate would first go into a closed-door session during which senators would raise issues about the nominees. Following the closed-door session the senators would resort back to plenary where a voice vote would be taken on each of the nominees.
The ruling of the Senate President would be final and can only be challenged when a senator calls for a division and it is at this point that PDP senators may challenge whatever decision Senator Saraki takes on Amaechi and Uguru.
Only one of the nominees screened yesterday, Aisha Abubakar, daughter of former super permanent secretary and minister, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji was waved through without a question. She was asked to take a bow and go upon submission by Senator Abiodun Olujimi.

Senate queries approval of N63.5bn for Abuja Airport’s 2nd runway contract

ABUJA—THE Senate, yesterday, queried the N63.5 billion approved for the construction of the second Runway for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, saying it was an attempt to ‘steal and rape’ Nigerians of the country’s common patrimony.

These resolutions were sequel to a motion by Senator Dino Melaye, All Progressives Congress, APC, Kogi West, titled, The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, Second Runway Contract.
It, however, called on the government to urgently construct a second runway at the airport and urged it to ensure that due process and diligence was followed in the award of contracts for the construction.
The Senate, while calling on the federal government to drastically reduce what it termed the unrealistic cost, said the government must monitor the contract award process.
Presenting the motion, Senator Melaye noted that the contract for the construction of the runway was cancelled by the last administration after allegation of over inflation of contracts was established.

While addressing guests at the opening ceremony of the North-East Humanitarian Multi-Stakeholders Engagement on Tuesday in Maiduguri, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on North-East Intervention(PCNI), Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, said N233 billion was needed for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the communities ravaged by the Boko Haram sect.

The chairman of PCNI, who was represented by a member of the committee, Mohammed Danjuma, said the rebuilding of the ravaged states needed proper coordination to alleviate the sufferings of the Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs).

He said the Federal Government and other stakeholders are determined to manage the humanitarian crisis in the region, adding that the IDPs would return to their communities after the reconstruction of their destroyed communities.

VP Osinbajo said:

This region has suffered tremendously in the past six years. It has suffered from the destruction of infrastructure, farmlands, businesses, trades, the destruction of schools and the loss of school years.
Rebuilding, restoring and rehabilitation will cost money and time. But neither money nor time can fix the trauma of loss of family members, relations and friends, the shame of the raped, the scars and fears of parents of the abducted and the kidnapped, the bewilderment that comes with loss of homes, possessions and livelihoods and the pains of hundreds of thousands of orphaned children.
The tasks before us are many and profound, to fix brick and mortar and to mend hearts and minds damaged by senseless murderous violence. But we are called not just to mend the hearts and minds of the victims but also of their traducers, and killers.
The young men and women who have been brainwashed to kill, maim and destroy in the warped belief that by so doing they please God, they are also victims. Indeed, these perpetrators are themselves victims, trapped in the vortex of evil manipulation, compelled to dehumanise themselves as they shed the blood of the innocent.
It is our duty to deconstruct the narrative that causes men to kill children on their beds at a boarding school at night even as we degrade the military capacity of the insurgents. The tasks are indeed many and profound.
But while there is still so much to do, much has been done already. The many civil society groups, funding partners, regional and international partners who have given of their time, resources and even their lives in some cases, deserve to be commended. But for you, first responders, we would have been far worse off than we are today.
We are in Maiduguri to show humanity and to give milk of human kindness to our brothers and sisters who for six years have been ravaged by Boko Haram insurgency by killing, maiming and abduction of innocent people.

Despite the deadline, Nobody knows when Boko Haram War will end – Gowon

A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has said nobody can predict when the current insurgency ravaging the North-East geo-political zone of the country will end.

The ex-military leader said this while reacting to the December deadline in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, on Tuesday, when he led a team of Roll Back Malaria officials on an advocacy visit to Governor Dave Umahi.

According to him, the Nigerian military will do its best to meet the December deadline “but nobody can really and confidently talk about the particular time any military operation is going to end.”

May the spirits of these poor little children who are being brainwashed to carry out such heinous crimes rest in peace.
I can tell you this; nobody can really talk about when any particular operation is going to end, and as a Commander-in-chief, I know this.
Yes, you can say you target a particular time, but it may finish before that time or it may go slightly beyond. To end it, that is the most important thing.
I assure you that I have absolute confidence in our military that they are going to really deal with the situation as they are doing at the moment.Gowon commended the successes recorded by the past administration in the fight against Boko Haram as well as President Muhammadu Buhari’s present administration efforts to wipe out the insurgents.

He urged Nigerians to pray fervently and have confidence in the military as that was the only way to encourage them.

Prayer is an alternative and the most effective weapon to defeat Boko Haram.
With prayers, God will touch their hearts to change for the better
He concluded.

Ministerial Screening: PDP Senators attack nominee over careless remarks

Temper rose on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday during the screening of 6 out of the remaining 11 ministerial nominees of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Trouble started when the nominee from Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Usani Uguru, during his screening, said “God forbid” to an observation that he had a good relationship with some Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) politicians as a public officer.

The nominee, a member of the Nigerian Copyright Commission, had informed the senators that he had a good relationship with some politicians, including senators, in the discharge of his official duties.

“Are they PDP members?” a senator asked. Uguru responded, “God forbid”, twice, thus provoking the anger of the opposition senators and a point of order raised by the Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, who is the immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State.

Akpabio drew the attention of the Senate to the alleged rude remarks of the nominee against the PDP, stressing that the privileges and rights of his colleagues had been breached by the nominee.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, noted the observation of the minority leader and asked the nominee to react to the issue. The nominee apologised and the screening process continued.

Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, also of PDP, accused the nominee of failure to declare his assets because the document was not attached to his Curriculum Vitae.

Saraki, however, intervened and informed his colleagues that all the nominees had submitted copies of their resume and that they were available in his office for confirmation.

Another PDP senator, Mao Ohuabunwa, drew the attention of the Senate to the fact that Uguru allegedly procured his tax clearance certificates on the same day, thereby creating an impression that the nominee had rushed to pay because of the screening.

Ohuabunwa said:

All the tax clearance certificates the man submitted to the Senate were obtained on the same day. Mr. Senate President, we should not ignore it. We should find out why tax clearance for a number of years were obtained and submitted to the Senate on the same day.
I am a Christian and this was submitted by a Pastor, not a Mallam. This is not correct, it is not in order.

Saraki also faulted the point of order raised by Ohuabunwa and ruled him out of order, while the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, clarified that Uguru as well as other nominees could still declare their assets, either before or after their confirmation.

Another nominee, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed from Zamfara State, created a mild drama when a senator asked her to recite the National Pledge and she missed a line.

Ahmed who had worked in the Nigerian Telecommunications Industry for about 20 years before her appointment as the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative ended the pledge with “….to be loyal, faithful and honest” instead of “…to be faithful, loyal and honest”.

This action generated prolonged side talks among the senators.

Electricity generation from the nation’s biggest power plant, Egbin in Lagos, dropped by 18.8 per cent to 660 megawatts from 813MW, an official said on Tuesday.
Supply to the national grid also dropped to 3,990.36MW as of October 26 from 4,029.39MW the previous day, data obtained by our correspondent from the Presidential Task Force on Power on Tuesday showed.
The Egbin power plant has the capacity to contribute about 1,000MW to the national grid.
A source at the plant said that the drop was as a result of the ongoing maintenance of the Egbin lines by the Nigerian Gas Company.
The source said the plant was advised by the NGC to step down its electricity generation due to the ongoing repairs at its gas lines.
“The Egbin power plant, the nation’s biggest power generating outfit, has the capacity to wheel out 1,000 megawatts to the national grid. The ongoing maintenance of the NGC lines has stalled the wheeling out of 1,000 megawatts to the national grid,” the source was quoted as saying.
According to the source, the development may also affect the general output of the other stations that receive gas from the NGC.
A top official at the Egbin plant, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed to our correspondent that the company’s output was restricted due to the ongoing work by the NGC on the gas lines, saying, “They told us not to go beyond a particular level of capacity. When they are fixing their own gas issues, they always tell us to drop our load. The power generation from Egbin has dropped because of gas restrictions.”
When contacted for comments, the Director, Public Affairs, Transmission Company of Nigeria, Mrs. Seun Olagunju, said the national power generation output now stood at 4,274MW.
“As of this morning (Tuesday), the national power generation output was 4,274 megawatts,” she said.
“There is nothing like that; we don’t give outrageous bills to any of our customers,” she said.

Wike: Rivers APC hails supreme court judgement

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers on Tuesday hailed the Supreme Court’s verdict on Governor Nyesom Wike’s application challenging the relocation of the Rivers Election Petitions Tribunal from Port Harcourt to Abuja.

Mr. Chris FineBone, the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, said in a statement in Port Harcourt that the apex court had affirmed that the tribunal’s sitting was moved to Abuja because of insecurity reasons commending the tribunal for ensuring the safety of the tribunal chairman, members and witnesses.

As a party, the APC is grateful that all seven eminent jurists of the Supreme Court unanimously agreed that there was sufficient violence before, during and after the elections to justify the relocation of the tribunal to Abuja.
The statement said that the party was happy with the observation of the court that Rivers State was “a theatre of war’’ and as such protection of lives of members of the panel and interested parties was paramount.

The APC also noted with satisfaction that the justices for once again re-affirmed that they were always ready to dispense justice without fear or favour.

The significance of all seven eminent justices of the Supreme Court speaking in one voice in today’s judgment is that the faith, hope and confidence of the ordinary Nigerian to get justice is assured in the Nigerian judicial system.

The statement reads

Dickson warns Bayelsa Youths against violence.

Ahead of the December 5 governorship election, the Governor of Bayelsa, Seriake Dickson, on Tuesday implored the youths to desist from any form of electoral violence capable of destabilising the state.

Receiving a delegation of Women Arise for Change Initiative led by its President, Dr. Joe Odumakin, in his office, Yenagoa, the governor asked the youths not to destroy the legacies of his admin..

What every woman needs to know about breast cancer

The month of October denotes breast cancer month. The word ‘cancer’ is a very dreadful terminology for both doctors and patients alike.

It is so feared because of the suffering that patients go through and high death rates associated with the disease.

What does the word ‘cancer’ mean? It simply refers to the uncontrolled growth and spread of aberrant (abnormal) cells in the body.

Cancer can affect various systems in the body, including the female reproductive system.
The female reproductive system constitutes the organs and structures that are involved in the process of reproduction in women.

These organs and structures include the cervix, uterus (womb), ovaries, vagina, vulva, fallopian tubes and the mammary glands, which are the breasts. Female reproductive cancers, thus, include cancers affecting the ovaries, cervix, uterus and so on.

Female reproductive cancers (those of cervix and breast) constitute the commonest group of the disease in women, especially in the country. They have been associated with high mortality (death) rates. So the import of preventing cancers of the reproductive tract cannot be overemphasised.

What are toxins?

Toxins are harmful substances, which are capable of causing disease, especially when introduced into the body. Toxins can get into the human body by various routes like eating the wrong food, inhalation, skin contact, among others.

It is interesting to note that toxins can stay in the human body without immediately causing symptoms and do linger on for a long time, which may be for years and even decades before the negative effects are noticed.

Numerous scientific studies have linked toxins in the development of cancer and these toxins are referred to as ‘carcinogens’.

The study of toxins and ‘carcinogenesis’ (development of cancer), is a very complex and dynamic field as more and more toxins are discovered. As noted before, toxins can be in the water you drink, your food, immediate environment (work, schools, house and other places), pesticides, solvents and so on.

Toxins are involved in carcinogenesis, a very complex and sometimes poorly understood topic. It is pertinent to note that cancer cells are usually normal cells at first that undergo certain changes that cause them to begin to divide in an uncontrollable manner and spread.

These usually involve an alteration in the structure of a DNA (De-oxyribonucleic acid of a cell). In other words, the DNA is concerned with the regulation of the alterations in the genetic composition of the cell.

These alterations are referred to as ‘mutations’ and toxins that lead to these changes are called ‘mutagens’. However, not all mutagens are carcinogens and vice versa.

A number of toxins/carcinogens have been associated with female reproductive tract cancers. Toxins associated with cancer of the ovary include asbestos, talcum powder and pesticides; while those associated with cancer of the cervix include DES (Diethylstilbestrol-which is present in many contraceptives) and tobacco smoke.

Carcinogens linked to breast cancer include ethyl alcohol, tobacco smoke, aromatic amines in plastics and DES in contraceptives; recently the wearing of bras with metallic supports has been linked to breast cancer.

This has led to the production of bras with plastic support. While those linked to uterine cancer include dichloroethane found in PVC plastics and other hydrocarbon products, arsenic (found in herbicides, wood preservatives and lead alloys in batteries), DES and acrylamide(found in cosmetics).

Carcinogens can be divided into various classes based on what stage of carcinogenesis they affect, thus they can be grouped as initiator carcinogens, promoter carcinogens and progressor carcinogens.

Also, some carcinogens can influence all the stages of carcinogenesis. Examples of initiator carcinogens include nitrosamine (found in smoked fish and cured meat) and cadmium, which is found in batteries, while examples of progressor carcinogens include asbestos, which is used in roofing and ceiling materials and arsenic present in herbicides.

Because of the intricate association between various toxins and cancer development, the question of how to deal with these toxins becomes very important.

The most important fact is based on the work of Prof. Warburg (1883-1970) who was nominated for the Nobel Prize. His focus was that development of cancer is due to blockage of the energy-producing cell in the body called mitochondria leading to the switch off the cell control mechanisms. In other words, the carcinogens take control of the cell and do not allow it to function properly.

Therefore, any situation to address cancer must control the cell control mechanisms. This brings us to the topic of detoxification.

What is detoxification?

Detoxification is the process of removing toxic substances or toxins from the body of a living organism.

Detoxification can be carried out by various methods or techniques. The aim of detoxification is to treat or prevent various diseases in the body by removing the substances that could cause them.

The removal of toxic substances associated with a type of cancer from the body of an individual, for example, could help to protect the individual from developing that cancer, especially when he/she is at high risk of developing it.

Detoxification could be used as a method of preventing the development of female reproductive cancers in women – such as ovarian and breast cancer by removing the associated carcinogens. In addition to other activities like cancer screening and early detection, vaccination and aggressive chemotherapy, detoxification could also be used as a tool in dealing with the scourge of female reproductive cancers that have plagued womankind.
