Power supply dips as Egbin plant loses 153MW

Electricity generation from the nation’s biggest power plant, Egbin in Lagos, dropped by 18.8 per cent to 660 megawatts from 813MW, an official said on Tuesday.
Supply to the national grid also dropped to 3,990.36MW as of October 26 from 4,029.39MW the previous day, data obtained by our correspondent from the Presidential Task Force on Power on Tuesday showed.
The Egbin power plant has the capacity to contribute about 1,000MW to the national grid.
A source at the plant said that the drop was as a result of the ongoing maintenance of the Egbin lines by the Nigerian Gas Company.
The source said the plant was advised by the NGC to step down its electricity generation due to the ongoing repairs at its gas lines.
“The Egbin power plant, the nation’s biggest power generating outfit, has the capacity to wheel out 1,000 megawatts to the national grid. The ongoing maintenance of the NGC lines has stalled the wheeling out of 1,000 megawatts to the national grid,” the source was quoted as saying.
According to the source, the development may also affect the general output of the other stations that receive gas from the NGC.
A top official at the Egbin plant, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed to our correspondent that the company’s output was restricted due to the ongoing work by the NGC on the gas lines, saying, “They told us not to go beyond a particular level of capacity. When they are fixing their own gas issues, they always tell us to drop our load. The power generation from Egbin has dropped because of gas restrictions.”
When contacted for comments, the Director, Public Affairs, Transmission Company of Nigeria, Mrs. Seun Olagunju, said the national power generation output now stood at 4,274MW.
“As of this morning (Tuesday), the national power generation output was 4,274 megawatts,” she said.
“There is nothing like that; we don’t give outrageous bills to any of our customers,” she said.
