Obehi's blog confirmed that a commercial motorcyclist, Garuba Gambo, charged with the alleged theft of a new motorcycle valued at N150, 000 and selling it for N30, 000 was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. He was, however, granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum. Gambo, 19, who resides at Fagba area in Agege , Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Dec. 24 at the Railway Line, Fagba, Agege, Lagos. He said that the accused stole a motorcycle belonging to Mr Mutari Alahasa and sold it to Haruna Ibrahim, who is also a commercial motorcyclist. “The accused stole the complainant’s motorcycle valued at N150, 000 and sold it to Ibrahim for N30, 000,’’ he said.
Okuoimose said the complainant bought a new, unregistered motorcycle and parked it in front of his house, to take some rest. “After resting, on coming out, he discovered that the motorcycle had been removed by some unknown person,’’ he said. The prosecutor said that the motorcycle was later recovered from Ibrahim, who claimed that the accused sold it to him.
“The motorcycle was later recovered from Ibrahim after six days of searching and he confessed that Gambo sold it to him at the rate of N30, 000,’’ he said. The offences, Okuoimose said, contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term for the accused, if convicted.
The accused, however, pleaded `not guilty’ to the two-count charge preferred against him. The Magistrate, Mr O.A Aka-Bashorun, adjourned the case to Feb. 2, for mention.
