Lucky U-23 Eagles beat Mali 3-2

Nigeria was lucky to survive a second half Malian blitz to win their first three points of the on-going African U-23 Nations Cup holding Senegal yesterday.

The U-23 Eagles romped to a 3-0 lead in the first half, but relied on Mali’s poor marksmanship and the grace of the bar to win 3-2 on a day many pundits wrote off the Malians after a poor opening half.

Former 3SC star, Junior Ajayi, scored twice, while Usman Mohammed got one as Nigeria took commanding lead in the first half.

But that was all the Nigerians could offer, as Mali chased the game in the second half, with Niane scoring from the penalty spot on the 54-minute after Oghenekaro Etebo fouled him inside the box.

Souleyman Sissoko made it 2-3 10 minutes later when he waltz through the Nigerian defence to beat Emmanuel Daniel.

That made for a nervy end to the game with the Nigerians struggling to fend off the sleek Malians.

Before Mali’s goals, they could have taken the lead in the first half, but the cross bar foiled Adama Traore’s effort.

Nigeria’s opening goal came in the 16th minute when Junior Ajayi back heeled Stanley Dimgba’s cross into the net.

It became 2-0 in the 34th minute when Usman Mohammed scrambled a loose ball into the net.

The dangerous Adama Traore would have reduced the tally a minute later, but goalkeeper Daniel was alive to his responsibilities as he blocked a point-blank effort from the Malian.

And just before the end of the first half, Ajayi capitalised on the failure of the Malian goalkeeper to hold Captain Azubuike Okechukwu’s shot to make it 3-0.

In the other game of Group B earlier in the day, Egypt and Algeria played out a 1-1 draw.

Why terrorism, violent crimes thrive, by Buhari

PRESIDENT Muhammad Buhari says violent extremism and terrorism could only thrive and endure if good people remain idle and complacent.

President Buhari who spoke on behalf of other participating African Heads of State and Government at the closing executive session of the 2015 Commonwealth Summit in Malta said he was confident that terrorism would be ultimately defeated with greater international collaboration.

In another development, Commonwealth leaders rose from their three-day meeting yesterday in Malta with a firm resolve to tackle the twin issues of violent extremism and devastating effects of climate change across the globe.

President Buhari who participated in virtually all the deliberations at the meeting has since left Malta for Paris, the capital of France, where he is expected to participate in the global summit on climate change scheduled to open in the city today.

A statement by Garba Shehu his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity in Malta quoted Buhari as saying: “We have had the opportunity to discuss, in a serene atmosphere, wide-ranging issues that are of great significance, not only to the members of the Commonwealth, but to the entire global community.

“Of particular note is the Action Statement on Climate Change, which is expected to herald our commitment to saving the planet for present and future generations.

“Of equal significance are our deliberations on Radicalisation and Violent Extremism. We are witnesses to the growing phenomenon of terrorism that is affecting us all, whether big or small.

“The reign of terror will only succeed if peace-loving people choose to remain idle. But I am confident that through our collective efforts, we will defeat this scourge and restore peace,” Buhari said.

The president also reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of Nigeria and other African member-countries to the promotion and protection of the core values of the Commonwealth.

“I came into power via democratic principles and values espoused by this same body. Nigeria as a country, will continue to protect and promote these democratic ideals,” Buhari assured heads of delegations at the session.

President Buhari thanked the outgoing Secretary-General, Kamalesh Sharma for his exemplary service to the Commonwealth, saying: “We in Nigeria will not forget his five memorable visits to our country during his tenure. As this is his last CHOGM in his present capacity, I know I speak for my colleagues from Africa in expressing our immense gratitude and best wishes to him,” Buhari said.

He also congratulated the Commonwealth’s Secretary-General-elect, Patricia Janet Scotland, and assured her of the full support of Nigeria and other African members of the Commonwealth.

In a communique at the end of the meeting, the Heads of Government of the 53-member nations under the aegis of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, ( CHGM) reaffirmed their shared and “enduring commitment” of the people to the values and principles of the Commonwealth Charter.

Besides, the communique further stressed that the leaders also addressed issues bordering on sustainable development, trade and investment, migration and safety guarding the interests of Commonwealth small states and emphasised that the unique nature of the Commonwealth added value in responding to contemporary global challenges.

10 Things Girls Hate About Being Girls.

10157-thumb
Obviously there’s a crazy amount of cool things that come with being a girl but sometimes, the everyday monotony of dealing with life gets a little overwhelming.
We’re a pretty complex gender and often fail to determine what exactly we even want half of the time. But, given the number of things we simultaneously juggle, can you blame us?
I’ve got a list as long as my arm, which I’ll refrain from boring you with, but I’m sure most girls will nod in agreement at these simple but spot-on situations.
So, sit back, grab a tissue if you’re on your lady cycle, resist the urge to text back the assh*le if you’re having boy problems and ditch the Instagram explore page for just a minute.
Because here, my friends, are the 10 things we hate most about being girls:

Boko Haram claims suicide attack on Muslim procession

Boko Haram on Saturday claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing on a Shiite Muslim procession near the northern Nigerian city of Kano that killed 22 people.
The hardline Islamist group said in a statement in Arabic on social media its bomber “detonated his explosives which led to the death” of the victims on Friday.
“And by the permission of Allah these attacks of ours against Shi’a polytheists will continue ‎until we cleanse the earth of their filth,” it warned.
At least 21 people were initially reported killed but the toll rose after one more person was confirmed dead.
“For now, we have 22 deaths following the death of one more person yesterday. Thirty-eight people have also been injured, two of whom have been discharged from the hospital,” one of the organisers of the march Ali Kakaki told our source.
He said that, despite the attack on Friday, the Islamic Movement of Nigeria members had continued their march from Kano to Zaria in neighbouring Kaduna state, where their leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky is based.
The march is to mark Ashura, which commemorates the death of Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed.
“Following the attack, many more of our members have joined the procession,” Kakaki said, adding that they aimed to arrive at their destination next week.
Friday’s attack took place in the village of Dakasoye, some 20 kilometres (13 miles) south of the city of Kano.

Saro-Wiwa’s death, watershed in N-Delta struggle —Prof Darah.

A lecturer in the English and Literary Studies Department, Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, Prof. Godini Darah, has described the death of the late President of the Movement of the Survival of the Ogoni People, MOSOP, Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others, as the singular factor that paved the way for the Niger Delta struggle.

The All Progressives Congress, APC-led Federal Government, yesterday, said the payment of the N5,000 stipend to the unemployed Nigerian youths will commence next year. It regretted that the payment could not take off immediately because it was not included in this year’s budget. Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr Solomon Dalong, revealed this yesterday in Abuja when he paid a condolence visit to the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, at the national secretariat in Abuja on the demise of Prince Abubakar Audu, the late governorship candidate of the party in Kogi State election. Dalong, who spoke with journalists, assured that APC government would also create more jobs to fulfill its campaign promises. The party, during the electioneering campaigns, had pledged to pay N5000 stipend to unemployed youths monthly. Said he: “I would want the youths to understand that every promise must be backed up by budgetary provision and our promise to pay N5000 is not contained in the 2015 budget. So, definitely, it is going to begin in 2016 as we have made budgetary allocations for that. “We are committed to the campaign promises of creating jobs, providing wealth creation and combat poverty. We have embedded in our manifesto things that we are translating to reality. “We are busy reviewing some of the youth empowerment programmes that are ongoing, to ensure that they are more viable and people oriented. We are also looking at the possibility of realigning some of them to our vision so that in the final analysis, it can add value to the people”. The minister also said that he would soon convene a stakeholders meeting to help re-orientate the Nigerian youths. In his remarks earlier, the National Chairman of APC, Chief Oyegun, expressed optimism in the performance of Dalong as Youths and Sports minister.

Fuel scarcity: NNPC apologises to Nigerians.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, yesterday, apologised to Nigerians for the hardship experienced in purchasing petrol, while it also stated that it had entered into a partnership with security agencies in the country to assist in the monitoring of fuel supply across the country.

He said: “We must all make sure that petroleum products get across to Nigerians at the regulated price especially as the yuletide season approaches. We have enough products and we want to plead with the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTDs) not to be involved in the diversion of petroleum products in order to avoid causing untold hardship to motorists.”
Role of the security agencies
Providing insight on the role of the security agencies in curbing product diversion, Managing Director of the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company, Mrs. Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue, said the DSS and EFCC have been mobilized to bring to book any marketer involved in sabotaging the efforts of the Federal Government in making petroleum products available to motorists across the country.
She said: “We have invited the EFCC and DSS to join us in this campaign of monitoring the movement of petroleum products and they have our mandate to sanction any errant marketer. Enough is enough.”
She urged Nigerians and other motorists to desist from panic buying assuring that there are sufficient petroleum products to satisfy local consumption.

Julius Berger, RCC return to Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Contractors handling the re-construction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Julius Berger Plc and Raynolds Construction Company (Nigeria), are back on site in continuation of the job.

Julius Berger’s men were seen working at the Redemption Camp and Arepo areas at the Lagos end of the road on Friday. But the work was more of a palliative as the firms only attended to the failed sections of the road. No reconstruction or expansion was done.

Our soure reported on Sunday that while palliative work was ongoing at the failed spots around the Redemption Camp area of the road, major construction work was being done at the Arepo area.

The repair on the Arepo spot caused gridlock on the Long Bridge on Friday and travellers spent about two hours moving from the Berger Bus to Arepo, a distance that should take less than seven minutes.

It was, however, not clear the role of the Ogun State Government in the return of Julius Berger to the site. A signpost erected by the state government was still at the Arepo spot as of Sunday, showing that it was responsible for the palliative work.

Julius Berger is handling Section One of the project, which stretches from the Sagamu Inter-Change to Lagos, while RCC is in charge of Section Two, stretching from the Sagamu Inter-Change to Ojoo, Ibadan.

Motorists have clamoured for an early completion of the road, which is about the busiest highway in the country.

A source at the Julius Berger end of the road, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the company was back on the road for good, saying: “It is time to move forward on the project.”

The expected date for the completion of the project, which is being financed through Public-Private Partnership, is July 3, 2017.

Meanwhile, motorists and commuters who use the road have continued to appeal to the Federal Government to speed up work to make travelling on the road pleasurable.

A commercial vehicle driver plying the road daily, Ojo Agege, told NAN that it was high time the government ensured the speedy completion of the project.

Another commercial driver, Lateef Mohammed, said motorists would continue to have nightmares on the road until the Federal Government fixed it.

“All we are saying is that the government should help to fast-track the construction of the road to ease the delay being experienced daily by travellers,” he said.

A female trader, Simisola Joseph, expressed optimism that with the coming of Babatunde Fashola as Power, Works and Housing Minister, the construction would soon be completed.

A driver, Femi Ajegun, told NAN that vehicular movement was now easy with the completion of work on some critical areas at the Ibadan end of the road.

“With the quality of job done and removal of long stretch of diversion by the RCC, motorists and travellers now experience some pleasurable ride,” he said.

Sule Maito, a bus passenger, at Ogere area of the road, told NAN that if the contractor could continue with the way it was going, the job would be completed on schedule.

The Federal Ministry of Works last week, after a meeting of stakeholders with the Presidency, said that the government had committed N50bn to the project.

The ministry promised that no stone would be left unturned to ensure the completion of the rehabilitation on time.

Compilation Of Fuel Prices Across Nigeria

Nigerians have been grappling with fuel scarcity for some time now and are unsure when it will come to an end.
Scarcity of petrol has continued to bite harder despite assurances by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) that all will be well soon.
A number of petrol stations are shut and some are said to have petroleum product but are hoarding it.
Ibe Kachikwu, the minister of state for petroleum resources, has ordered the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to seal off fuel stations found to be hoarding petroleum products and .
As the fuel scarcity persists, black marketers have taken opportunity of the situation to siphon money from eager Nigerians, selling at exorbitant prices.
Very long and frightening queues have taken over the few filling stations that are selling. The worse part is that some of them are selling at exorbitant prices, way higher than the fuel pump price.
N87 per litre is the official pump price approved by the Nigerian government, but with the current fuel crisis, the price is way above N100.
Some of our readers have informed us of how much petrol is being sold in their area. Check it out below.Abuja:
According to Ndulue Seny from Gwagwalada, MRS filling station sells N97/litre while all others sell N130, 140/litre as the case may be.

Another reader, Joshua O Obighwre, wrote: I bought fuel today in Warri N200 per litre in a fuel station. I wonder if PMB is alive.”
Charles Ijeh wrote: Reporting from Ubulu uku and Ogwashi in Aniocha South local government area, Delta state. Fuel in NNPC is #87, but other stations are selling at #150 per litre.”
Edo:
Nelly Alohan says it was N150 per litre in Benin.

Enugu:
It’s between N120 and N140 in Enugu, says Kami Eazychi.
Kano and Kaduna:
According to Vaayough Victor, it isN140/litre in Kano and N130/litre in Kaduna.
Lagos:
A woman looking downcast and confused wait to buy fuel at Conoil petrol station, Lagos.
The price still N87 in some filling stations while some have hiked their price.
According to Salimon Alade, it is N100 per litre in Ojo local govt area of Lagos while Rita Ega Etta said it’s N97 in Ketu.
Nasarawa:
Ester Okpara wrote: “Yes oh in fact the situation of fuel increment is going worse every day at Nasarawa state. Per litre is one hundred and sixty naira (N160) and the govt are not helping matter at all.”

Rivers state:

Rainoil, a filling station very close to the Police Headquaters, Igwurita sells PMS for N150.
“This is outrageous. These people are just taking advantage of everything. I just got 10 litres at N1500. Black marketers sell theirs for N350 per litre. It’s unfair,” a commercial driver who pleaded anonymity lamented.
Lucky Godspower Okone from Port Harcourt said his area is N140, that is if you see the fuel to buy.

The court advised both parties to give peace a chance and desist from causing trouble henceforth. The husband, had on Nov 2, urged the court to dissolve the union for alleged adultery, uncooperative attitude, pride and constant fighting. He told the court that they got married in 2009 and the marriage was blessed with two children namely: Seyi Adelakun, 5, and Imole Adelakun, 11 months. “My wife is fun of adultery, giving me no rest of mind since we got married and has no courtesy neither respect for me and my family. “Am tired of her, there was a time her boyfriend attacked me. He would have killed me, if not God, to the extent that I was hospitalised. “If I delay the divorcement, she would eventually kill me and marry her boyfriend, the earlier the better for the safety of my life,” he said. So so funny!

Achieving Biafra For Dummies.

Achieving Biafra For Dummies
It is necessary to explain the non violent and non loony-Nnamdi Kanu easy methods to achieve "Biafra." Some of my Igbo brethren think I am anti-Biafra; on the contrary, while my research has confirmed that there was never a historic Biafra in Nigeria and it was rather in Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, I and the organization to which I belong is pro-self determination 100% if this is the desire of the people. To coexist no be by force. One of the most deadly situations experienced in life is when a failed marriage is forced to continue. Lots of times we regret too late after someone has been killed or taken his or her own life.

If indeed the true desire of the intellectually capable majority of any peoples in the East or elsewhere is to be divorced from Nigeria; they should be given such opportunity according to the laws of the United Nations.

Failure to give such opportunity can lead to what Nigeria was almost exterminated from where particular blocks voted en mass for a reckless and insanely corrupt candidate that no one liked, simply to oppose the other parts they despise and keep those "other" parts frustrated in never ending terror pogroms under that clueless candidate. Failure to listen to their desire puts the nation in the greatest risk.

Nigeria must truly conference and table all issues if it is to live together as Ojukwu said. Nnamdi Kanu, the miscreant leader of Radio Biafra did not even as for a referendum or try to win elections in his state before beginning to buy guns and bullets to kill Nigerians. He was a mess. Perhaps when MASSOB urinated on him (as he said) it affected him mentally.

The issues I have are with the miscreant pro-PDP bully, Nnamdi Kanu who stole IPOB from the council of elders and resorted to abuse and terror methods to promote his financially rewarding BiaFraud business, while making a mess of true agitations and hindering any empathy and concern for the legitimate. He should remain in jail or/and face capital punishment for his treasonable and terror offenses according to Nigeria's constitution and the 2011 Anti-Terror act as amended.

The appointment of ministers with portfolios has formally heralded the much-awaited kick-off \
While applauding the President's resolve to introduce changes and far-reaching reforms let it be such that will regenerate, revitalize and reunite the country, especially under a beleaguered government in Abuja that is fighting conflicts on all fronts calling to mind the ongoing jihadist insurgency and separatist feelings and agitations that hang over the country.
Ministers have been appointed and given portfolios which means work has in earnest begun. The government in Abuja has no earthly reason to fail Nigerians who fought doggedly to dethrone 16 years of PDP 'prodigal misrule'. Buhari was never a part of the PDP dynasty since 1999 which probably attracted sympathy to him when he again decided to vie for the nation's highest office. Now the die is cast and he has ascended the throne and ministers have been appointed by him, in the long run, to help him in the day-to-day running of his government.

Ebola nurse released from isolation in Britain.

A British nurse who suffered a relapse after contracting Ebola in Sierra Leone has been released from isolation after being treated for meningitis caused by the virus, her hospital said.

Pauline Cafferkey, 39, had been kept in isolation at London’s Royal Free Hospital since October 9 and became “critically ill” shortly afterwards.

But she is no longer infectious and has been now transferred to a hospital in the city of Glasgow in Scotland, where she is from.

“We are delighted that Pauline has made a full recovery from Ebola and is now well enough to return to Scotland. We would like to wish her well for the future,” a spokeswoman for the Royal Free Hospital said in a statement.

Cafferkey initially contracted Ebola while working as a nurse at a treatment centre in Kerry Town in Sierra Leone run by charity Save the Children.

She was diagnosed with the disease in December last year on her return to Glasgow and spent almost a month in isolation in the Royal Free Hospital, which has Britain’s only isolation ward for the lethal disease, before being released in January.

But in October she was re-admitted to hospital, suffering from rare late complications due to the virus.

Royal Free infectious diseases consultant Michael Jacobs explained at the time that the original Ebola virus had been inside her brain replicating at a low level, and had re-emerged to cause meningitis.

“This is an unprecedented situation,” Jacobs said.

Forty people in contact with her were offered vaccinations following her relapse, while Cafferkey was treated with experimental drug GS5734 while in isolation.

Upon her release from hospital Wednesday, Cafferkey thanked the staff of the hospital for their “amazing care”.

“For a second time, staff across many departments of the hospital have worked incredibly hard to help me recover and I will always be grateful to them and the NHS,” or National Health Service, Cafferkey said.

“I am looking forward to returning to Scotland and to seeing my family and friends again.”

The 2013 Ebola outbreak in west Africa infected some 28,000 people and left 11,300 dead, the virus’ highest toll since its identification in central Africa in 1976.

LASUTH celebrates first kidney transplant.

Doctors at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, yesterday celebrated the first successful kidney transplant ever done in Lagos tertiary hospital. The feat, conducted on a 56-year-old unnamed male patient, was after several years of training and infrastructure development in the hospital.

Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Prof. Adewale Oke, said the feat, by a team of homegrown doctors, has opened the way for several other patients with advanced renal conditions to be fully treated and at affordable cost in the country.

Oke explained that the patient, who was at the end-stage renal disease, was selected for the maiden surgery, and after about six-hour surgery (organ harvesting and implantation), the operation was successful.

The elated CMD said: “LASUTH has come of age and we are glad. We are able to harness what we have and so we will continue to improve on infrastructure. Kidney transplant is not free; it cannot be free, but with us doing it here, the cost will be affordable (compared to traveling to India or United Kingdom for operation).”

he said.
He added that the feat has complemented the state government’s infrastructure efforts in developing the state-of-the-art Cardiac and Renal Centre in Gbagada.

Head of the surgical team, Dr. Olugbenga Awobusuyi, said that the journey started some 10 years ago, when the hospital began capacity building of specialists with training courses done in Brazil, Kenya and United Kingdom.
Today, Awobusuyi said, we now have confidence that we could do more of renal transplantation of patients around here.
He said that the latest of several services offered in the hospital would help stop the trend of patients going to India and returning with complications that often eventually kill them.

Awobusuyi, a neurologist, said that the patient, who is still recuperating in the ward, had to be persuaded to have the operation here in Nigeria instead of India, his first choice. After a year of dialysis, the patient came up with a donor (nephew), which made LASUTH to consider the operation.

LASUTH management said that where compatible donors are readily available, the procedure is now more possible in the Lagos tertiary hospital.

Kidney transplantation or renal transplantation is the organ transplant of a kidney into a patient with end-stage renal disease. Kidney transplantation is typically classified as deceased-donor (formerly known as cadaveric) or living-donor transplantation depending on the source of the donor organ.

Living-donor renal transplants are further characterized as genetically related (living-related) or non-related (living-unrelated) transplants, depending on whether a biological relationship exists between the donor and recipient

Fashola begins enquiry into power sector shame

Fear grips civil servants over restructuring
• Presidency unfair to Culture, says Soyinka
NEW ministers, new style.
Barely 48 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated his 37-member ‘round- pegs-in-round-holes’ cabinet to man the 25 restructured ministries, some of them are already raring to go.

They have been reeling out statements that indicate the direction of the present government.
Among such ministers is Power, Works and Housing’s Babatunde Raji Fashola, who has commenced inquiry into the problems of the power sector and why it allegedly failed to deliver the desired promises to the country.

Fashola, who met with directors at the ministry shortly after he resumed Wednesday wanted to know if some of the problems of the sector were systematic or man made.

He urged the management of the ministry to be open with information, as he was determined to find a solution to the lingering power issue.

“We are here to work with you, in solving problems on ground as quickly as possible. We want to know if some of those problems are man-made or systemic,” he noted.

A meeting that took place on the day of inauguration was attended by the Minister of State, Alhaji Mustapha Baba Shehuri, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Louis Edozien and directors.

The minister said his thoughts are on how to bring together processes and activities of all the ministries now under his supervision for effective service delivery.
He assured the ministry’s leadership of his willingness to learn from them as career people who had been on the job for a long time.
“We want information on what has been done, what remained to be done, and what are the future plans; we want to continue from there.”

Also speaking, Shehuri requested a detailed Ministerial Briefing Document to serve as guide for proper takeoff.
Director, Human Resources, Mrs. Grace Papka, gave copies of the requested documents to the two ministers, in addition to a timetable for proposed briefings by departments and agencies in the power sector.

Already concerned Nigerians have hailed President Buhari’s choice of Fashola as ‘placing square peg in square hole.
Speaking under the aegis of Gateway for Empowerment and Justice for Peace Initiative (GEJPI), the group at a media briefing yesterday in Abuja said that considering the requisite experience and records of performance in maintaining sustained economic growth and unprecedented infrastructure development in the last eight years in Lagos State, it is only appropriate that Fashola be given a heavy portfolio to handle.

Leader of the group, Jide Cole, an engineer said: “Yes, we are aware that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Buhari were determined to bring on board the best technocrats and administrators into the new government. Our expectations have been met and even surpassed as the President gave Nigerians a pleasant surprise.
“Therefore, we want to lend our voice, joining other well-meaning citizens of this great nation in thanking Buhari for such great show of wisdom and administrative finesse by putting square pegs in square holes.

We also congratulate Fashola for being best suited as minister for the combined portfolios he got because he is a hard working, unassuming and transparently so. He is a person who never gets tired of whatever he sets his eyes to achieve. He came in as governor of Lagos State in 2007, and after eight years turned Lagos into the state to beat in Nigeria.
“We also believe that President Buhari saw Fashola as a disciplined man just like himself who was ready to work assiduously. He ensured that he implemented his predecessor’s idea for a Bus Rapid Transport System which eased the transportation problems of Lagosians. And of course, this trait is one of the things Fashola will bring to bear in his new assignment.”

Meanwhile, there is anxiety among directors and other senior level workers in ministries affected by the restructuring like Aviation, Police Affairs, Housing, Urban Development, Power and Works, Youths and Sports even as Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, yesterday decried the fact the Culture Ministry was a victim of the exercise.
To him, the Culture Ministry is ‘missing in action.’
“We all know that culture is, at best regarded as an orphan, but does General Buhari have to make it so obvious? Even orphans are entitled to a foster home,” he lamented.

Culture is now subsumed by the Ministry of Information, while Special Duties was scrapped and the Department of Budget and National Planning excised from the Ministry of Finance and now a substantive ministry headed by Senator Udo Udoma.

However, the workers in the affected ministries, yesterday gathered in groups discussing the development as many expressed the concern that they could soon be rendered redundant.

But, it was a blend of joy and sadness in many of the merged ministries, while some workers wore long faces, others were happy that their arrears of salary had been paid.

Former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has declared that he would have “no problem” returning to Stamford Bridge, but he does not believe that the club will sack Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho is under pressure after a catastrophic start to the season and Ancelotti has been linked with a return to the club he led to a Premier League and FA Cup double in 2010 before being dismissed a year later.

The Italian is currently out of work following his departure from Real Madrid at the end of last season, but although he is open to the idea of a return to Chelsea, he does not believe there will be a vacancy any time soon.

“I would have no problem with Chelsea,” Obehi,'s blog source said. “But Jose won’t be sacked. They already chose to keep him, and I think they made a good choice.”

Ancelotti dismissed reports that he had been approached by Liverpool prior to their appointment of Jurgen Klopp, but said that he would like to work in England again if the right opportunity arises.

“I would like to come back to work in England,” he said. “I love the football here, I still have a house in London and I would like to be with a team that is competitive in England and in Europe.

“I think Liverpool are a good team … I think they can be really competitive. But I did not speak with them. If I spoke with them I can say ‘Yes’, but no, I did not.”

FIFA approves five presidential candidates, Platini pending

FIFA approved five candidates to stand in February’s vote to replace Sepp Blatter as president of world football’s governing body, but Michel Platini has not yet made the list.

The five who met the qualifications following a series of integrity tests were: Prince Ali Al Hussein, Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Jerome Champagne, Gianni Infantino and Tokyo Sexwale, a FIFA statement said.

The candidacy of Platini, the suspended head of European football who had been the favourite to succeed Blatter, will be examined once his 90-day suspension by FIFA’s ethics committee is over.

The only candidate to be disqualified after receiving provisional approval was Musa Bility, the head of the Liberian football association.

“The Ad-hoc Electoral Committee did not admit the candidature of Musa Hassan Bility, in view of the content of the integrity check report relating to him,” the statement said.

FIFA said it had explained the reasons for disqualification privately to Bility, but it would not make the specifics public.

The race is thought to be wide open given Platini’s potential ethics violations, including a probe over a murky $2 million payment he received from FIFA in 2011.

His suspension triggered a flurry of activity with the powerful Asian football chief Sheikh Salman, former FIFA official Champagne, South African anti-apartheid campaigner Sexwale, UEFA general secretary Infantino and Bility all throwing their hats into the ring.

The race is likely to be heavily shaped by whether Platini is ultimately admitted, with Infantino indicating he would stand aside if his UEFA boss qualifies for the vote.

Tenant docked for allegedly raping landlady’s great-grand daughter.

35-year-old man, Yusuf Umaru, on Thursday appeared before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos state , for allegedly raping the great-grand daughter of his landlady.
The accused, who resides at 14, Eketunde St., in Anibaba Area of Ikorodu, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a 15-year-old girl.
Umaru has, however, denied the charge.
The Prosecutor, Mr Iyabode Johnson, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 15 in an empty room at the above-mentioned address.
Johnson said, “The victim usually visits her great-grandmother at every Eid-el-kabir (Ileya festival).
“At every `ileya’ festival that the girl came visiting, the accused usually raped her and would threaten her not to report the case to anyone if she did not want to die.
“But during this year’s `Ileya’ Festival held in September, the girl could not bear it anymore and summoned the courage to report the matter to her great-grandmother who is the accused’s landlady.’’
Johnson said that the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 137 states that any person who has sexual intercourse with a child is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. A.A. Oshiniyi, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties that must be house owners in Ikorodu Magisterial District.
Such sureties, she added, must also be working in an established firm.
Oshiniyi adjourned the case till Dec. 3 for mention.
