MTN denies illegal transfer of $14bn from Nigeria

South African telecoms giant MTN on Wednesday denied an allegation that it had illegally repatriated $13.92 billion from Nigeria, saying the claim was without merit.

Lawmakers in the upper house of Nigeria’s parliament agreed on Tuesday to investigate the allegation that MTN, Africa’s biggest telecoms company, illegally transferred the money out of the West African country.

“The allegations made against MTN are completely unfounded and without any merit,” MTN Nigeria chief executive Ferdi Moolman said in brief statement.

The allegation threatens to raise tensions between Nigeria and MTN just three months after the South African firm agreed to pay a reduced fine of N330 billion in a settlement with Abuja over unregistered SIM cards, reports Reuters.

MTN is the largest mobile phone operator in Nigeria, which accounts for around one third of the company’s revenues. The company had threatened to pull out of Nigeria during the dispute over unregistered SIM cards.

“It’s not a good development but it may stem from the forex crunch in Nigeria. They don’t want forex to leave the country unnecessarily,” said Cobus de Hart, an analyst at NKC African Economics.

“It highlights the fact that the Nigerian central bank wants to maintain a firm grip on the forex market and this will obviously not bode well for investor sentiment,” he said.

MTN shares fell more than 3 percent on Tuesday but opened 1 percent firmer on Wednesday.

Edo guber poll: Security agencies battle ready – AIG

Ahead of today’s gubernatorial election in Edo State, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5, AIG Isaac Eke, yesterday expressed the readiness of the security agencies for the poll. He said, the security officials deployed for the election were on ground to forestall any crisis before, during and after the election.

Speaking to selected journalists at the state Police Headquarters in Benin, Eke said the Nigeria Police had deployed enough personnel for the election, especially in the riverine areas and warned VIPs not to move about with their aides during the election. He said: “It is no longer news that we have 25, 000 policemen on ground to take care of the waterways, airways and land.

We have policemen deployed to various local governments and wards. We also have about 250 vehicles deployed for policing during the election. “VIPs are not allowed to move about with their aides while voting is ongoing.

We have restriction of movements between 6am and 6pm. Likewise, we have intervention force.” Shedding more light on security arrangements made to forestall manipulation of the election through the waterways, Eke said: “We have gunboats and speedboats, the speedboats are there to convey the officials. We have gunboats to be positioned at strategic areas to forestall threat. We cannot hold aloof because of unforeseen circumstances.”

On the possibility of security agencies being partisan or biased during the election, AIG Eke said Nigeria Police will not be political. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) yesterday said a total of 15, 250 of its personnel had also been deployed to the state to ensure the peaceful conduct of today’s poll. Acting Deputy Commandant General, Operations, NCSDC, Mr. Hillary Madu, stated this while addressing the corps in Benin.

He said the personnel deployed for the election include 15,000 armed and unarmed officers while the other 250 are drawn from specialised units of the NSCDC. Madu said the specialised units include the Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) unit, Kernel units, Counter Terrorism unit, undercover officers and others. He said all the personnel deployed are expected to work in synergy with other security agencies meant for the polls towards making the election free, fair and credible. Madu also warned that anybody out to disrupt the electoral process would be dealt with according to the law even as he cautioned officers and men of the NSCDC against any form of compromise by the politicians.

While describing the state as a peaceful one, the NSCDC boss further appealed to the people to ensure that the prevailing atmosphere of peace was sustained before, during and after the election, adding that five commandants from neighbouring states had been deployed to coordinate the 15,250 officers deployed to the state. According to him, “We are here to maintain peace, that is exactly why we are here, we are preaching peace and appealing to everybody, especially the politicians and their loyalists to help us sustain this peace. “This election is not about anybody, and it is not worth the soul of anybody. We must all work for the success of the poll.

For us as a security agency, we are not politicians; we are here to ensure free, fair and credible governorship election.” Madu said the major flash points across the state have been mapped out for effective surveillance and that officers of the NSCDC would be visible in all the 2, 627 polling units, and 192 wards in the 18 councils of the state.

HISTORIC times. THE BINIS

The coronation ceremonies of an Oba of Benin usually last about 10 days. They begin from Egua-Edaiken, the traditional residence of the heir-apparent to the Benin Throne. On a day fixed by the Edaiken, he is escorted by his Uselu people on his journey back to Benin City. On the way he stops at an historical palm tree named "Udinama aimiuwa" (translated to mean "work before pleasure")
which the Edaiken "climbs" symbolically. This little ceremony dates its origin to the time of Oba Ewuare the Great whose life as heir apparent to the throne was characterised by long suffering which includedperiods when he personally had to climb palm trees on this spot to cut the fruits for a living. This act of suffering by the father of the first Edaiken has ever since been re-enacted in a symbolic way by every Edaiken. From the palm tree the Edaiken continues his journey to Benin City; but at the first moat called (Iya-akpan) in the vicinity of where the firm of Mid-Motors Nigeria Limited now stands, the Uselu chiefs in the procession take leave of the Edaiken and return to Uselu while the Edaiken is thereafter escorted into the City by Oredo Chiefs. The Edaiken enters the City via Iguisi (now Lagos Street) and Proceeds to Eko-Ohae (bachelor's camp) where he stays for three days. After three days at Eko-Ohae the Edaiken continues his journey to Usama. The venue of the traditional Coronation rites. Usama was the site where Oromiyan, the father of Eweka I, built the first Palace and all succeeding Obas from Eweka I, were crowned and lived there, until Oba Ewedo in the 13th century moved the palace to the present site in the centre of the town. The Edaiken remains in Usama for 7 days performing all the rituals and ceremonies of the Oba. Before the expiration of 7 days, he visits a village a few kilometers outside Benin, where he performs the ceremony for chosing the name he will answer as the Oba of Benin. This tradition started during the period of Oba Eweka I whose maternal grand-father, Ogie-Egor, lived in the next door village of Egor. When Prince Oromiyan left Benin, he left behind his Bini wife who was pregnant in the care of her father the Ogie of Egor. The woman delivered a male child who was dumb from birth. The maternal grand-father then sent home to Use, the mother's village for treatment, but when he grew up and still could not talk, words were sent to his father at Uhe. His father sent 7 magical akhue with which the dumb Prince participated in the popular village game known as akhue. With only one seed remaining on the ground and every player having failed to strike it. The young Prince used the magical akhue from his father and succeeded in striking down the remaining seed. Excited by this feat, he spoke for the first exclaiming in Yoruba, Owimika (my hand has struck it). He later assumed this expression for a title which became corrupted to Eweka.

Domestic servants names used to open $15m accounts for Patience Jonathan

Four domestic servants, including a driver and a houseboy, whose names were used to open bank accounts for Mrs Dame Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan has been arrested by The Economic and Financial Crimes CommissionSources within the anti-graft agency said on Sunday that the companies’ accounts were opened at Skye Bank.

The companies are Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Limited, Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited and Globus Integrated Service Limited.

The four companies’ accounts, which have since been frozen by the EFCC, have a balance of about $15m while another account, which bears Patience Jonathan’s name, has $5m.

Mr. Sammie Somiari, who deposed to an affidavit on behalf of the ex-President’s wife, said the former First Lady was the owner of the money in the accounts.

She had revealed that she gave millions of dollars to the then Special Adviser to the President on Domestic Affairs, Waripamowei Dudafa, to open accounts for her.

Somiari, however, claimed that Dudafa opened five accounts for Patience and that only one of the accounts was in her name, while the other four were opened in the names of companies belonging to Dudafa.

A detective at the EFCC, however, revealed that Dudafa used his domestic servants’ names to open the four other accounts and then deposited the money into the accounts.

The operative added, “We were investigating Dudafa when we stumbled on those four companies’ domiciliary accounts opened at Skye Bank with a balance of about $15m. On further investigation, we were able to identify the directors of the companies.

“When we detained the directors, we found out that they were Dudafa’s domestic servants. One of them was a houseboy while another one was a driver. Their photographs were used in opening the accounts and their signatures were forged.

“We found out that these domestic servants were completely innocent because they had no access to the accounts. We have since released them. The sole signatory to the accounts was Patience Jonathan and she was issued with a special card, which is accepted worldwide. She has a separate account, which was opened in her name and has a balance of $5m.”

The detective said a lawyer, Amajuoyi Briggs, who allegedly helped Dudafa to perpetrate the fraud, would also be arraigned.

It was learnt that two Skye Bank executives, Demola Bolodeoku and Dipo Oshodi, who helped Dudafa to open the accounts on March 22, 2010, were also being investigated.

The detective added, “This is a clear case of fraud and there is no way the bank officials will say they did not know what was going on. They are under investigation and those found culpable will be arraigned.”

The EFCC operative said he could not immediately confirm if the transaction was reported to the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit.

He explained that the commission had discovered a trend which politicians used in laundering and concealing funds, saying it was becoming more rampant due to the operation of the Bank Verification Number which links all accounts owned by an individual.

He added, “What we have noticed is that in order to conceal funds, what politicians and top civil servants do is to open bank accounts in the name of family or friends and then make themselves the sole signatory to the account.

“Don’t forget that we traced about 17 bank accounts to the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (retd.).

“Often times, they do this in connivance with bank officials and that is why the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, has said henceforth, whenever we are investigating a bank official, we will probe the entire bank as well because these officials usually act under the instruction of their superiors.”

Jonathan’s wife has, however, sued Skye Bank for freezing her bank accounts and giving the EFCC vital information about her finances.

She also wants the court to order Skye Bank to pay her damages in the sum of N200m for what she termed a violation of her right to own personal properties under Section 44 of the 1999 Constitution..

Ezekwesili blames Buhari for Nigeria’s woes

Former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili, has blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for the current economy recession.

Ezekwesili, who stated in a whatsApp message last night, said:
I still find it funny that most people don’t know why Nigeria economy went into recession. They love the incompetent lies of Lai Mohammed about the past government ruining everything.

‘’It’s also myopic to think that if Jonathan were to still be in power, we would be worse off.

The truth about Nigeria’s recession is this; it was caused by the president’s unguided rhetoric and uncultured body language.

‘’Firstly, there is nothing we are buying today that we weren’t buying five years ago, therefore it’s not our purchase that put pressure on Naira but withdrawal of funds by foreign investors.

‘’After the election, the President created instability with his statements about how everyone is corrupt and how everyone is going to jail.

‘’The instability made foreign investors to liquidate their investment and change their money to dollars. In the process of trying to flee, they were willing to buy dollars at any price, which lead to high exchange dollar rate.

‘’Even though some of them were not ready to run away, but want their money in dollars to save their investments from devaluation, the president gave a bad signal by banning deposit of foreign currency into domiciliary accounts.”

‘That was enough for free market believers to see the draconian handwriting on the wall, that was the beginning of dollar rush.

‘’To make matters worse, the President came up with another outrageous policy of rationing dollar to certain sectors and blocking many sectors out. That was the nail in the coffin which facilitated the emergence of free fall.

“My Husband Wants Me To Swear Before a Deity To Prove My Marital Fidelity”

One Mrs Mary Ike has brought a case to the Jikwoyi customary court, Abuja, saying that her husband, Augustine Ike, threatened her to take an oath of marital fidelity before a deity to ascertain her faithfulness him since she got married.

She made this known in a divorce suit she filed against her husband. In her words,

“My husband wants me to swear that I have never slept with any other man since we got married.

“My husband and members of his kindred say I must swear to show that I am innocent of the allegation, the kinsmen say that if I swear and the deity finds me guilty that I will run mad. They also said that if I don’t swear and I continue to make love with my husband, or even give him food or water to drink, that he will die.

“I don’t want to run mad or have my husband dead, I just want to end this marriage and swearing before any deity except God is against my religion,” she said.

She prays the court to bring the marriage to an end because she does not want to lose her husband or go mad.

Reacting to the case, her husband,Mr. Ike said he did not come to the court to listen to the case but to serve it with the pending motion at the appeal court.

PDP hired 8,000 militants to rig polls – Oshiomhole

The Governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole, has accused Governors in the South-South of plotting with the Edo Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the governorship polls which was slated to hold on September 10, 2016.

Oshiomhole also alleged that the PDP in Edo state hired 8,000 militants to rig the governorship elections.

The Edo Governor said this when he hosted the Inspector –General of Police, Ibrahim Idris at the Edo Government House.

He alleged that the Edo PDP liaised with Governors of Rivers and Delta states to bring militants to the state and disrupt the elections.

According to Leadership, Oshiomhole said “In line with my tradition, I have always tried to speak out on any matter that I am worried about. I first raised this alarm on the eve of INEC Continuing Voters’ Registration exercise, an exercise that has been designed to register those who have become eighteen between the last registration and the current one.

“But these criminals who are determined to perpetrate violence and deny us the beauty of a peaceful election, unable to find local participants have chosen to import these militants with the support of two or so of my brothers. When I say brothers, I mean brother governors. It doesn’t matter if I disagree with them, they are my brothers.

“They are exporting militants to Edo State to register so that with the PVC in their hands, they will appear to have the lawful basis to be present at the designated polling units where they are expected to unleash violence on election day.”

He said, “When I raised this alarm, I should expect naturally criminals are not as courageous as they seem. They denied that there was any such plan, but happily our ever vigilant, the peace-loving electorate were able to apprehend some of these people from other states that came into Edo State for the purpose of this exercise.

“At least, thirteen of them were handed over to the police. The IG may wish to establish what has happened to those people who were handed over. So, we handed them over to the police in line with what we were expected to do as civilised people.

“Having done that, we are clear that there are a lot of people, up to eight thousand of them who are non-resident in Edo State, who are not indigenes of Edo State, who are indigenes and residents of Delta and Rivers states and some other states in the South-South, some from Bayelsa state who have registered for the sole purpose not to swell the votes, but to be present in various locations on election day.

“Now, as part of the processes they put in place to effect this, they had conspirators in INEC that made available to them data capturing machine in the residences of various opposition leaders. We shared these experiences with the police and the DSS."

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has described the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) claim that it influenced the postponement of the state governorship elections as idiotic.

Chibok girls issue is a scam – Rev. says

The National President of the Women’s Wing of the Christian Council of Nigeria (WOWICCN), Rev. Mrs. Omatsola Williams, has described the whole saga of the Chibok girls as a scam.

Williams also said everybody is taking advantage of the issue of the girls to make money out of it.

She also cited the confrontation that ensued between the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) campaign and a Pro-Buhari group.

Williams said the matter has been politicised, adding that people are now using it to promote themselves.

She said "For me o’, I don’t believe that there is Chibok girl. We should not use the life of people to play ‘Jambo’ (game) at all. Some people are using this to make money. Ah ha! How tick is the Sambisa forest is it that people cannot penetrate?

“Food for thought; when you come to Niger Delta Area, there is no secret. Let Nigerians do not toil with Nigerians, because before they know it, women will arise and they will see the other side of women.”

Speaking on the current economic situation in the country, Williams said “Let all of us go back to the drawing board, and forget about oil. Nigeria is a blessed country, a fertile land that has a lot of opportunities to tap. We have forgotten, even the talents giving to us, we don’t want to use it.

“Now is the time, the era of white-collar jobs is over. If you recall, how did Japan grow after the Hiroshima war? They had nothing but hand work. With determination and self development, they built up Japan. Is Japan no controlling the world today? Nigeria! We can even do better.”

Barcelona sign up Lionel Messi’s son for new children’s project – report

Lionel Messi’s three-year-old son is reportedly set to join Barcelona’s new ‘baby’ project.

The Argentinian superstar recently revealed that his eldest child, Thiago, was uninterested in football.

However, the toddler will now play alongside the children of other Barcelona players and staff members, according to El Larguero (via Sport).

The report claims that the youth set-up, dubbed FCBEscola, will focus on developing kids from the ages of three to five.

Potentially ahead of a future in La Masia, the source suggests that the programme will aim to provide the children with the much-vaunted ‘Barcelona DNA’.

Meanwhile, Messi senior is currently sidelined through injury, after suffering a groin problem on international duty.
Wonders, indeed

Alexis Sanchez says he has reached the level of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

ARSENAL forward Alexis Sanchez says he has reached a level where he can compete with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sanchez joined Arsenal in 2014 from Barcelona, where he played alongside five-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi in attack, and has since scored 30 goals in 68 Premier League appearances for the Gunners.

Ronaldo, who has won two Champions League titles in the last three years with Real Madrid, captained Portugal to Euro 2016 success this summer and scored 54 goals in all competitions last season. However, Sanchez believes he has now got to a point where there is no one superior to him in football.

“I have reached a level where I can compete with great players,” Sanchez told Sport. “I do not feel inferior to anybody. I liken [my qualities] to Messi and Ronaldo. I have the same abilities as them.”

Alcacer happy to play wide to accommodate “the best No.9 in the world”

New Barcelona forward Paco Alcacer is relishing the opportunity to work alongside the “best No.9 in the world” in Luis Suarez, and is willing to play wide when called upon.

Alcacer, who joined the Spanish champions from Valencia this summer, admires the fear that Suarez instils in defenders in La Liga and is looking to learn a lot from the Uruguayan.

Whilst the 23-year-old sees himself as someone that should play centrally, he admitted that he would be willing to play on the flanks if that’s what manager Luis Enrique wants.

The Spain international told Barcelona’s official website: “When I found out that Barça wanted me I was impressed. I thought of my family and there was more of a chance to say yes than no.

“Now I’m here with Luis, the best No.9 in the world and I’m sure I’ll improve a lot alongside him.

“In Luis Suárez I look at his effectiveness and the fear he instils in opposition defences. My position is centre-forward but if I have to play out wide I will do so.”

Alcacer will need to be willing to feature in several positions if he hopes to play, due to the form of Suarez, who has already scored three goals in Barcelona’s opening two league games, as well as Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Valencia struggled in La Liga as they slumped to a 12th-place finish last term, but Alcacer still impressed as he scored 13 goals and provided six assists across 34 appearances.

Barcelona Trio Reunited, Cristiano Ronaldo Returns For Real Madrid

Madrid: Barcelona's fearsome front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar could join forces for the first time in four months against Alaves, while Cristiano Ronaldo will make his Real Madrid return on Saturday.

Neymar has missed Barca's 100 percent start to the season due to his efforts in leading Brazil to Olympic gold on home soil, but returned to Spain for the first time since May after more international duty in World Cup qualifying this week and is expected to start at the Camp Nou.

Messi is a much bigger doubt after missing Argentina's clash with Venezuela in midweek due to a groin problem. The five-time World Player of the Year has played a limited part in training in recent days and coach Luis Enrique is likely to be cautious for the first of seven games in 22 days for Barca.

Paco Alcacer is in line to make his debut after sealing a 30 million-euro ($33 million) move from Valencia and the Spanish international striker is aware he will have to make the most of limited opportunities as fourth choice behind Messi, Suarez and Neymar.

"I will do everything I can to take advantage of the chances I have to the full," Alcacer said as he was presented on Thursday.

Andres Iniesta has also returned to training following a knee injury and will battle Arda Turan and Denis Suarez for a place in midfield as both have impressed early in the campaign.

Ronaldo makes his long-awaited return at the Santiago Bernabeu against Osasuna earlier on Saturday in what will be his first appearance since suffering ligament damage in his left knee during Portugal's Euro 2016 final win over France.

Real haven't suffered in Ronaldo's absence with two wins from their opening two La Liga games and victory over Sevilla in the European Super Cup.

And after winning two Champions League titles in his first three seasons at Madrid, Gareth Bale insists the European champions have to put more emphasis on ending a four-year run without winning La Liga.

Nigeria’s Health Council To Approve National Health Policy

The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, said that the focus was to ensure speedy approval of the policy towards strategic inclusion in the 2017 budget for effective implementation.

He explained that its development became necessary following the trend of global health epidemics such as the Ebola virus and Nigeria’s continued need to attain a universal health coverage and accessible healthcare.

The National Health Policy, when approved, will mandate the revamping and construction of primary healthcare centres in each of the 10,000 political wards in the count
ry over the next three years.

This will give up to 100 million Nigerians access to basic and affordable health care services.

This National Health Policy 2016 under consideration by the National Health Council in Abuja, would be the third health policy to be developed and implemented in Nigeria after 1988 and 2004.

Intense deliberations are expected over issues such as the development of the second national strategic health development plan and the role of states in the operationalization of the National Heath Act.

Updated September 8, 2016

Adams-Oshiomhole-on-Edo-electionEdo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has expressed surprise at the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the state’s governorship election earlier slated for Saturday, September 10, 2016.

The agency on Thursday afternoon announced this decision after it had earlier said that it would go ahead with the polls.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Governor Oshiomhole described the decision as a set back for the state.

He frowned at the time it took the electoral body to make the decision, which he said affects the parties’ programmes.

He said that if INEC had given the hint earlier that the election would be postponed, the All Progressives Congress (APC) would have also postponed its final rally to suit the new election date.

The Governor also reacted to allegations that his party was behind the postponement of the election by stating that none of the other parties was as ready as the APC for Saturday’s election.

He argued that the large turnout of supporters at the party’s final campaign rally on Tuesday was an indication that Edo State was indeed an APC state.

He maintained that the only issue that involved him as the Governor of the state was INEC’s decision to fix the election to coincide with the West African Examination Council (WAEC), GCE examination, which led to protests by students of the state.

“INEC ought to have known that the West African Examination calendar was out there. It is not something they fix two or three weeks to the time,” he said.

Obaseki shines at debate, Ize-Iyamu fumbles

The flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 10 Edo governorship elections, Godwin Obaseki, emerged as the clear winner from the gubernatorial debate organized by Channels Television between the candidates in the governorship race – ahead of Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the factional candidate of the major opposition, Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

According to those present in the audience, Obaseki was the most outstanding of the four runners in the 90-minute televised debate from Best Western Hotel, Benin City. He exuded confidence as he expertly responded to a series of questions ranging from how he would tackle the problem of insecurity in the state; plans to diversify and significantly boost the economy of Edo; and steps to tackle unemployment and create 200,000 jobs in 4 years.

The consensus among young people who watched the debate was summed up by 21-year old Joy Iredia, a student of the University of Benin: “Up until now I did not take much interest in politics. But listening to all the candidates speak, I was drawn in by the candidate of the APC, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and how kept his focus on the issues and articulated his plans to take Edo State forward, particularly the use of technology as a tool for effective governance and job creation.”

On his part, Mr. Osahon Bello, a civil servant, said, “The civil service forms the major workforce in Edo State. I align with Obaseki’s plan to restructure the civil service in order to be more efficient and productive through robust training strategies to meet the challenges of fostering strong, sustainable and balanced economic growth.”

Obaseki, a renowned investment banker and wealth management expert of over 30 years repute, posited that the economic challenges confronting us as a people today are so complex that it takes someone with a full grasp of all the issues, and practical experience in solving complex economic problems to lead the state on the path to prosperity.

Referring to the ‘simple agenda’ of PDP’s Ize-Iyamu, Obaseki pointed out that this is the time for us to be circumspect and think things through very carefully, not simplistically. “Simple solutions cannot solve our complex political problems; they cannot solve our complex economic problems; and can definitely not solve our complex security problems. It is mental indolence to think there are simple solutions to our problems.”

The APC flagbearer noted, “The world is set for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We have identified the cycles and markers and we are prepared to play our part in this forward shift in the gears, ideologically opposed to being left behind. Our vision is a modern and progressive Edo State where every citizen is empowered with opportunity to live life in its fullness.”

In his closing remark, Obaseki assured of better days ahead for Edo people, promising that his will be a people-oriented and inclusive government. He appealed to the electorate to support his bid by voting massively for the APC come September 10

APC alleges plot by PDP to unleash mayhem, rig elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has raised alarm over an alleged plot by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to unleash violence and cause confusion in the state so as to pave way for them to rig the gubernatorial elections scheduled for September 10.

According to a statement released by the party, “no less than 500 militants from Delta are being mobilized to critical areas of Edo State to carry out this evil plan using the waterways. The primary targets are Edo-North using the River Niger to access areas around Agenebode; Edo-South, via the Osse River; and Edo Central, via Ilushi River.”

Citing internal sources within the PDP, the APC also alleges that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members recruited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to participate in the conduct of the elections are being compromised by the PDP with the lure of huge financial rewards should they agree to act out the their script to rig the elections.

“In their desperation to seize power at all cost, they have not only perfected plans to usurp the distribution of the Permanent Voters Card (PVCs) across the state but have already started acting it out as we have received reports that some PVCs meant for certain Local Government Areas have been hijacked by PDP thugs.”

“We want to use this medium to call on the security agencies in the state, particularly the Nigerian Police Force, to investigate the matter expeditiously and immediately put in place measures to forestall their wicked plans, and maintain peace and order throughout this electioneering period. We also call on INEC to carry out due diligence on all its ad-hoc staff and monitor them closely so that those who have been compromised will not be allowed to carry out the PDP’s devious plans”, the statement reads.

In his reaction to the alleged plot, the APC flagbearer, Godwin Obaseki noted, “We, in the APC, are not totally surprised by this distasteful development as the PDP is reputed for crude ‘do-or-die’ politics. We, however, want to state categorically that we will not be intimidated by their antics, and we will continue to push, through every legitimate means, our message of hope and prosperity.”

“We are also confident that the good people of Edo State, having experienced unprecedented development and transformation of the state under the leadership of Comrade Adams Oshiomole of the APC will vehemently resist any attempt by the PDP to halt the remarkable progress we have made, and lead us back to the dark days when our people watched helplessly as a few thieving politicians pillaged our commonwealth and nearly destroyed our state.”

Amidst uncertainty on the September 10 exercise due recommendations for postponement by security operatives, Obaseki urged his supporters to be vigilant, and continue to conduct themselves peacefully as law-abiding citizens of Edo State.

Buhari begs Nigerians to change from old ways

President Muhammadu Buhari launched the change campaign, code-named, “Change Begins With Me,” in Abuja, yesterday, vowing to eliminate rent-seeking from the nation’s public service.

He told the gathering of top government officials, civil society organizations and private sector operators that he was not under any illusion that the needed change would happen overnight.

The president said he was, however, optimistic that with a consistent campaign and determination of the Nigerian public, the desired change would be achieve.

He said, “Nigeria today is passing through a challenging moment where hardly anything works in a normal manner. Many have attributed this phenomenon to the total breakdown of our core values over the years.

“ There is no doubt that our value system has been badly eroded over the years. The long-cherished and time-honoured, time-tested virtues of honesty, integrity, hard work, punctuality, good neighbourliness, abhorrence of corruption and patriotism, have given way in the main to dishonesty, indolence, unbridled corruption and widespread impunity.

“The resultant effect of this derailment in our value system is being felt in the social, political and economic spheres. It is the reason that some youths will take to cultism and brigandage instead of studying hard or engaging in decent living; it is the reason that some elements will break pipelines and other oil facilities, thus robbing the nation of much-needed resources; it is the reason that money belonging to our commonwealth will be brazenly stolen by the same public officials to whom they were entrusted; it is the reason why motorists drive through red traffic lights; it is the reason that many will engage in thuggery and vote-stealing during elections; it is part of what has driven our economy into deep problem out of which we are now working hard to extricate ourselves.“Every one of us must have a change from our old ways of doing things, we cannot fold our arms and allow things to continue the old way.

“We must resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship, pettiness and immaturity that have poisoned our country for so long. Let us summon a new spirit of responsibility, spirit of service, of patriotism and sacrifice, Let us all resolve to pitch in and work hard and look after, not only ourselves but one another.

“What the current problem has taught us is that we cannot have a thriving army of rent seekers and vested interests, while the majority suffers.

“Rather than sit back and complain endlessly, we have decided to act pragmatically, with the launch of this National Re-orientation Campaign. The campaign will not be a sprint but a marathon that will run the course of our tenure. We are under no illusion that the changes we seek will happen overnight, but we have no doubt that the campaign will help restore our value system and rekindle our nationalistic fervor”

President Buhari called for the buy-in of all Nigerians into the change campaign, with a promise that his government would provide necessary leadership for the desired results.

“I am therefore appealing to all Nigerians to be part of this campaign. Our citizens must realize that the change they want to see begins with them, and that personal and social reforms are not theoretic exercise. If you have not seen the change in you, you cannot see it in others or even the larger society. In other words, before you ask ‘where is the change they promised us’, you must first ask how far have I changed my ways ‘what have I done to be part of the change for the greater good of society.’

“While the government will drive the Change Begins With Me’ campaign, it must be strongly supported by all concerned, individually. In this regard the private sector is a major stakeholder. Indeed when the campaign succeeds, it will impact heavily on the private sector. A punctual, diligent and hardworking staff can only be of benefit of not just himself or herself or the organization they work for but to various governments whether at local, state or Federal level,” he said.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alh. Lai Mohammed, who made a multimedia presentation of the campaign materials, told the audience, “the change initiative has no political, ethnic and religious colouration but focused on rediscovering the Nigeria of our dream.”
He described it as, “a campaign to change the way we do things wrongly.”

Alh. Mohammed urged the media to partner government in spreading the message to all nooks and crannies of the country.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Ayotunde Adesugba, described the launching of the campaign as a significant land mark event in the annals of the country’s socio-economic and political development.

According to her, “the campaign is expected to impact positively on the nation now and in the future. Our future lies on decision we take today. A progressive future is possible if we change the negative things we do to achieve our vision.”

Earlier, the Director-General of National Orientation Agency, NOA, said that the Buhari Change agenda has been designed to make all citizens, young and old, as well as, corporate entities exhibit positive values.

Four Chibok Schoolgirls Among Newly Matriculated Students At AUN

The American University of Nigeria (AUN), on August 29, matriculated new intakes among whom were four out of the 24 Chibok girls who escaped from Boko Haram in 2014.
Since their lucky escape, all the 24 have been on AUN’s scholarship studying under a special preparatory program.

Also among the new students were those accepted for the maiden class of AUN’s new School of Law that kicked off this semester. The AUN Law program concentrates on Humanitarian, Gender and Environmental Laws.

Others who took part in the ceremony were those pursuing various postgraduate programs, among them were 18 winners of the 67 competitive AUN scholarships on offer, while several intakes were transferring from other universities in Ghana, Lebanon, Egypt, the US and some EU countries.

AUN admitted the largest number of undergraduates in a semester in the past three years, signaling a return to pre-insurgency admission figures.
In her address, AUN President, Dr. Margee Ensign announced that the type of education the new students will receive will ensure that they become leaders in their chosen fields.

“This kind of education will train you to look at problems from varying perspectives. All universities identify new problems, come up with new ideas, discover new truths and some change society. At AUN, Africa’s first Development University, this is what we are trying to accomplish,” she said.

She noted that upon graduation, the students would be well equipped and ready to confront the challenges in their community, country and continent.

Whether it is poverty, illiteracy, inequality, injustice or violence, “AUN students deal with such problems during their time at the university, asking questions about them, and finding solutions that improve the lives of their fellow human beings,” Ensign said.

God bless AUN.

Obama says Trump not qualified to be president

But why would a President conclude on politics.
Outgoing President Barack Obama condemned Donald Trump as unsuitable to be commander-in-chief Thursday, after the Republican nominee blasted US military brass and praised Vladimir Putin.

“I don’t think the guy’s qualified to be president of the United States, and every time he speaks, that opinion is confirmed,” Obama said in unusually caustic language while overseas.
Obama, who was in Laos for a summit with South East Asia leaders and his final trip to east Asia, said that Trump holds contradictory and “outright wacky ideas” and is “uninformed”.

“I can tell you from the interactions I have had over the last eight or nine days with foreign leaders that this is serious business,” Obama added.

“You actually have to know what you are talking about and you actually have to have done your homework. When you speak, it should actually reflect thought out policy you can implement.”

Trump on Wednesday raised eyebrows by saying that Russia’s president was “far more” of a leader than Obama.

Putin is “very much of a leader,” Trump said in a televised interview.

“It’s a very different system, and I don’t happen to like the system. But certainly in that system he’s been a leader, far more than our president has been a leader.”

Trump also drew fire for criticising the military.

“The generals have been reduced to rubble,” Trump said, before noting he had “faith in certain of the commanders”.

The bombastic mogul will face Hillary Clinton in November’s election, which the Democratic former first lady is tipped to win.

Trump has previously angered many in the military community with mocking remarks against US Senator and former prisoner of war John McCain for being captured in Vietnam.

Speaking in Laos about Trump’s unsuitability for office, Obama observed that over the course of the election season “people start thinking behaviour that in normal times we would consider completely unacceptable and outrageous becomes normalised”.

Obama is expected to hit the campaign trail with Clinton when he returns to the United States, with voter turnout likely to be a key theme.

Obama won the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections handily by mustering large numbers of young, black, Latino and Asian voters to go to the polls

80% Nigerian women, girls in Italy sex trafficking victims — VATICAN

About 80 percent of Nigerian women and girls, who arrive Italy, are sex trafficking victims, according to Vatican news agency, Agenzia Fides.

“Hundreds of thousands of people fall victim to human trafficking every year in Africa alone,” said Monsignor Ignatius Ayau Kaigama at an international conference against human trafficking organised by Christian Organisations Against Trafficking in Human Beings, COATNET, and Catholic Charity Caritas, Abuja.
”Of the overall number of victims, 79 percent are sexually exploited and the majority are women,” said Kaigama, who is the Archbishop of Jos and President of the Nigerian Bishops Conference.

He added: “The remaining 21 percent are coerced into forced labour, and the majority of these are men.

“In some parts of West Africa, the majority of trafficking victims are children under 18. This conference must find a way to put an end to child labour in all its forms.”

He also called on the Federal Government “to declare human trafficking a national disgrace, and to take urgent and long-lasting measures to address its root causes.

“This, in light of recent reports that 80 percent of Nigerian girls that reach Italy, do so for reasons of sex trafficking.”

ANOTHER NIGERIAN BLOGGER ARRESTED

Our attention has been drawn to the arrest and detention of a 38-year-old blogger and publisher of an online news medium, Abia Facts, Mr. Iroegbu Emenike by the State Security Service (SSS) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State at about 1:00 pm on Tuesday, September 6, 2016.

According to the wife of the blogger, Mrs. Ekaette Emenike Iroegbu, the blogger was arrested by three (3) SSS operatives who invaded their Uyo residence in a Gestapo style in a black jeep. The operatives took away the two phones of Mrs. Emenike; the bloggers own phones and laptop, etc. After ransacking their apartment, they whisked the blogger away without disclosing the reason for his arrest and their destination.

Though the Director of SSS, Akwa Ibom State Command, Mr. Adesina informed me at about 9:04 pm on Tuesday, September 6, that he was not aware of the blogger‘s arrest, the wife of the blogger who went to the SSS office in Uyo has confirmed that her husband is being held by the SSS in Uyo.

Without prejudice to whatever reason may have motivated the arrest and detention of the blogger, it is very worrisome that the fundamental right to freedom of expression guaranteed by Section 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) is being eroded at an alarming and unprecedented level since the inception of the current dispensation.

Few examples will suffice.

Emmanuel Ojo, a blogger, was arrested by the Ogun State Police Command on Saturday, September 26, 2015 on the orders of the Ogun State governor over his publication about the governor’s wife on Facebook. Blogger Seun Oloketuyi was equally arrested in 2015 over an online publication. Mr. Abubakar Sidiq Usman, a popular blogger and political commentator was arrested and detained recently by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged cyberstalking. Mr. Musa Azare from Bauchi State was also arrested recently by the Nigeria Police Force allegedly on the orders of his state governor over his critical publications on social media

The SSS and other security agencies should resist the emerging capricious proclivities of political office holders to use security agencies to clampdown on Nigerians for exercising their constitutional liberties. Democracy is being threatened in Nigeria by the rising display of intolerance to free speech.

Will the SSS and other security agencies be willing to arrest, detain and prosecute every Nigerian that is accused of making offensive or derogatory publication and statement? The security agencies should not be seen to be massaging the egos of the influential members of the society.

Those who believe that their reputation have been lowered in the eyes of right thinking members of the society should explore the legal option by seeking redress in a court of law.

While we are not yet certain about the person(s) who instigated Emenike’s arrest, it is on record that the Abia State bornblogger has been constantly harassed by the agents and officials of the Abia State Government over his publications. It is also on record that some government officials in Akwa Ibom State have been uncomfortable with some of his publications online.

We hereby call on the SSS to release Mr. Iroegbu Emenike immediately. Injury to one, is injury to all.

Thank you.

INEC Prepared For Edo Gubernatorial Election Despite Security Reports Asking For Postponement

Can this be real???  After all the preparation.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed on Wednesday that it is prepared to conduct the Edo State gubernatorial election slated for Saturday, September 10. The commission’s willingness to go ahead with the poll undermines requests by the police and Department of State Security (DSS) to postpone the election.

The two security agencies had on Wednesday morning threatened that “insurgents” and “extremists” would provoke violence during the election. This was disclosed in a security report issued jointly by the police and DSS. INEC officials told SaharaReporters that they heard of the "Security Report" while at a stakeholders meeting Benin City with the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations in attendance. The source further claimed INEC was 99% ready and had already distributed non-sensitive election materials across the State when the devastating report hit its officers and ad-hoc staff

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomole, who was campaigning outside of Benin City, urged INEC to avoid delaying the election for too long, saying that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was going to “bury” the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the contest.

Edo State PDP Chairman Dan Orbih opposed the postponement, saying such an action would put “democracy on trial.”

INEC sources speaking to SaharaReporters confirmed that neither the DSS nor the Nigeria Police Force consulted with the commission before advising it to postpone the election. INEC, however, was aware of the security report issued by the two agencies.

Saturday’s election between Godwin Obaseki (APC) and Osagie Ize-Iyamu (PDP) is expected to be tightly contested, with both camps engaging in last-minute efforts to secure victory.

President Muhammadu Buhari visited Benin City on Tuesday to address a rally in support of the APC candidate. In anticipation of the rally, the APC reportedly paid each Local Government coordinator N5 million to “mobilize” a crowd for the president Buhari though the attendance in the was impressive but it yielded poor support for APC's candidate regardless.

Meanwhile, PDP governors have been pumping funds into local government areas surrounding Benin City, claiming that the party has made progress that would defeat the APC on Saturday.

At the time of reporting, INEC has yet to make a statement officially postponing the election, although a source at the agency admitted that the security report has psychologically demobilized its workforce. However, its officials, including the chairperson and four national commissioners, plan to remain in Benin City until a final decision is made.

A Homeless boy drowns in Calabar drainage

The whole street yesterday was filled with sorrow and disguist, when the remains of a street urchin that died while swimming, was carried through the streets of Calabar, Cross River State, by his friends for burial.

The homeless boy, simply identified as Daniel, drowned, yesterday, while swimming with his friends in a drainage popularly called Big Gutter, in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The boy, who is about 10 years old, according to one of his colleagues, drowned at 12 noon, while swimming with others in the drainage around Atu Street, where the volume of water is high.

One of his friends said:

“He did not know how to swim. But some boys forced him into the water in Big Gutter, and he drowned.”

The body was carried by four of his friends through Target Street, heading to Bogobiri, the Hausa quarters, where they said arrangements would be made for his burial.
“We are taking him to Bogobiri, where we stay, so that we can make plans to bury him,” Effiong, one of the boys said.

He was later taken to the Goldie Cemetery, where he was buried by some adults.

Michael Ibru is dead

Michael Ibru, husband of Cecilia Ibru, former managing director of Oceanic Bank, has died.

Disclosing this in a statement, the family said he died in a US hospital in the early hours of Tuesday.

His death comes about five weeks after Felix, his brother, was buried.

The successful businessman also tried his hands in politics, contesting the 1983 governorship election of the old Bendel state. However, he lost to Samuel Ogbemudia.

James Ibori, former governor of Delta state, described Ibru’s death as “a great shook, not because the man who was born in 1930 and so was 86 died young, but because he was one of the few that actually defined the veritable Nigerian entrepreneurial spirit”.

He said the deceased was a trail-blazer who streaked through Nigeria like a meteor, lighting up the way for others to follow.

In 1956, Ibru was just a 26-year-old young man, yet he had the vision and the boldness to leave the U.A.C, and started a partnership with an expatriate, Jimmy Large, which he called Laibru,” Ibroi said via a statement signed by Tony Eluemunor, his media assistant.

Laibru successfully engaged in general trading, yet, a year later, Michael Ibru discovered some loopholes he could plug in the frozen fish market.

“Although this business was cornered by expatriate firms, Ibru plunged into it, establishing an importing company, rented and built cold storage facilities across the country, and by the mid-1960s fish business had become the traditional money maker for the Ibru organization.

“From, there, Ibru ventured into other profitable interests. He had such a Midas touch that he founded booming businesses in the fields of transportation, construction, etc.”

He also said: “The greatest lesson that Michael Ibru has left for Nigerians is that fact that he saw it as a point of duty to help his siblings develop their business empires, yet, they remained as one close knit family.

“The second lesson is that a business should not necessarily be a one-man concern. Thus, Ibru went into several partnerships with different people.

“The result is that today, the Ibru Organisation is an important segment of the Nigerian economy. In fact, it is an empire that runs from fishing to air transportation, Guardian newspapers, the hospitality business. In fact, the Ibru family-owned houses must have been one of the first private Real Estate firms in Nigeria.”

Similarly, Monday Igbuya, speaker of the Delta state house of assembly, condoled with the Ibru family, describing the deceased as a modest and strong businessman.

“Olorogun Micheal Ibru was a shrewd businessman with a good heart,” Igbuya said in a statement issued on his behalf by Henry Ebireri, his spokesman.

“Olorogun Michael Ibru as an international businessman, philanthropist, educator, a lover of children, grassroots organizer and community leader gained the respect, trust and love of the entire country and he will be greatly missed.”

Can’t afford Sallah ram? Here are 4 other alternatives

Eid-El-Kabir celebration is around is corner but recession is already on the scene — hence the question around town is “how will Nigerian Muslims celebrate Sallah?”

As per tradition, every Muslim home celebrates Sallah by stocking the pot of stew with any and every kind of Islam-permitted meat while their non-Islamic friends are already deciding on the Muslim friend(s) to visit on the day when animals become meat.

But with the shape of the economy and scarcity of funds, many Muslim families may be unable to purchase rams.

So as not to go bankrupt in an effort to celebrate Sallah, here are some other alternatives to buying a ram.

Share a camel/cow

As a result of the current average price of N175,000 per ram, many will be unable to afford the animal and according to Islamic laws, ram cannot be shared.

But there’s a way out for those who can’t singlehandedly afford a ram. The same laws allow for the sharing of camels and cows by a maximum of 7 people.

Hence, you can always decide to share a camel or cow with your neighbour, friend or family and save a lot in the process.

Goat

However, if you are not big on sharing or simply do not want to share with the world, your inability to afford a ram/cow/camel alone, why not go for a much cheaper animal.

Another option is goat, an animal whose meat can be wholesome and nourishing, if properly cooked.

By choosing to purchase a goat, you can still fill two pots with enough meat for the celebration and friendly neighbours can still get a piece or two.

Chicken

If the economy is particularly tough on you, don’t attempt to break the bank because rainy days are here to stay, literally and figuratively.

The Holy Quran says: “Whoever can afford to offer Sacrifice but does not offer it, let him not come near our prayer place (Ibn Majah 3123)”.

With the current recession in the country, if you are only able to afford a chicken (or two), it’s enough to celebrate with the family.

Buy beef/whatever you can afford

Every Muslim, who can afford to offer sacrifice should go ahead and make the sacrifice but if you can’t and all that’s within you capability is a pot of soup, go ahead and celebrate with that.

You can get beef from the market to celebrate sallah with your family. One or two kilos of meat would go a long way because half-bread is better than none.

Students demand shift in election date over WAEC exam

Edo State secondary school students say they are against plan to move them to other states for Saturday’s Mathematics examination by the West African Examination Council, WAEC.
The students, who stormed the Government House in Benin, on Tuesday to express their displeasure, said that writing the test in other states because the date coincided with the election would be a great risk.

Their spokesman, Iko Emmanuel Moses, said “The plan to relocate us out of our immediate community to sit for the examination because of the election in Edo State will affect our chance to perform well.

“We find this situation very disturbing, discouraging and we cannot take the risk.

“Conduciveness of environment has a great impact on the performance and outcome of examinations for students. We enrolled for this examination in Edo State, and we have prepared for the examination in Edo State environment.

“We are used to the environment for safety, comfort, accessibility of examination centres and psychology,” he said.

Responding, Governor Adams Oshiomhole said he would pass their protest letter to the President, saying that the election was fixed by INEC, which is an independent body.

“I was not consulted when the election for September 10 was scheduled. By law, INEC has the power to make those decisions. The law doesn’t oblige them to consult with me or to seek my approval,’’ he said.

We need our best players to qualify for 2018 World Cup – Rohr

Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has said that Nigeria need all the best players they have, for the team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Rohr was speaking during a visit to the secretariat of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Tuesday, where he met with the General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi and other top officials.

The German said: “We will need all our best players to be at their very best. We had a good list for the Tanzania match but a couple of players were injured and we will like to look at those ones as well.

“The focus is to strengthen the spine of the team and ensure they can beat any team. The confidence has not been there because the team failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, but when results start to come, the confidence will return.

“I have been well received by my assistant, (Salisu) Yusuf as well as Imama (Amapakabo) and Alloy (Agu), and also by the backroom staff. To be received with so much warmth by the NFF Management means we are all on the same page and we can work together and live as a family.

“I have a very good feeling about this job and the people I have to work with. I am also happy that the first week went very well because the players were able to quickly imbibe our philosophy. We need to have solidarity all round. The Technical Committee members have also been great. Certainly, the National Technical Director also has a role to play. The ambience is impressive.”

Nigeria must overcome Zambia, Algeria and Cameroon, to pick the sole ticket from their group, if they hope to be at the next World Cup

Block moulders commence five days strike

Nigeria is better off with Lagos than with the Niger Delta-Emir of Kano

The Emir of Kano,Sanusi Lamido took to instagram to share his opinion on the Niger Delta struggle and those clamoring for a split. He also revealed Lagos is  more useful for Nigeria than the oil rich producing states.
The Lagos story is a story of what Nigeria can do with itself – transparency, consistency, regulations. That’s why today Lagos state is 30% Nigerian non-oil GDP, and Lagos can dowithout oil. This country is better off with Lagos than with the Niger Delta. Let’s not make that mistake. We should be together as a country. Every part of the country is important. But, let us not be so obsessed by a resource, because we have had the commodity driven model, and we are blind to the potentials of an alternative model. Lagos doesn’t need oil. What is oil anyway? It is a raw material. You don’t drink it. You need it to move your vehicles. Now, you have electricity. You need it to fill your generator. Now you have solar power, and biomass. The future of oil is not there. So, those few people who are trying to break up this country over oil, after sometime that oil will be worthless. - Muhammadu Sanusi iI
